The schools and every damn thing else here were closed
Edited on Wed Feb-06-08 03:46 PM by mycritters2
BEFORE IT STARTED SNOWING!!! It rained until noon, and now we're getting flurries. But the whole damn town is boarded up like there's a hurricane coming. Morans. And my chair of deacons wants to cancel worship for tonight. I guess I will, but I swear, I've never seen people panic so over snow. If people behaved like this in Minnesota or the Dakotas, their whole economies would collapse.

OMG!! It's snowing!! In February!

Okay, rant off.

1. The schools around here are closed
because of Mardi Gras ... The States Dept of Transportation (Mississippi) went apeshit about two weeks ago when snow flurries were in the forecast.

2. Same thing here in Georgia.
All the schools shut down at the first hint of snow. And the bread and milk are cleaned out at the supermarkets.

3. Well, that's the difference between Illinois and a real midwestern state.

Speaking personally, I think that if the pastor can get to the church, the worship should go on, even if but a few people show up. I have no idea how far you are from the church, though.

The old "even if only one cow comes in, the farmer still milks her" adage.

But on the other hand, it ain't my life at risk. :-)

11. Just talked to my Diaconate chair and told her this.

I'll be there for worship. If no one else comes, that's cool. But I just have to cross the alley, and I think I can find my way through the flurries.

5. They started dismissing kids from school at noon
today and it was still raining.

Mr MB says it's not doing anything out there as of yet.

:banghead:

It's a wonder I ever get to actually TAKE a day off for myself, instead of using all my sick/vacation/personal days for school closings.....

6. Just how far south are you in Illinois?
I spent my grade school years in a town just north of the Illinois border (we used to walk across the border to buy a contraband substance---margarine!), and we never closed schools or anything unless the cars were buried.

9. 90 miles SW of Chicago.
I grew up an hour west of here, and don't remember any snow days. "No bus days", yes. But we town kids were expected to get to school. I'm amazed by this.

12. Maybe you've had a big influx of people from the Sun Belt
The reaction you describe sounds like the way people in western Oregon respond to forecasts of snow.

7. Are you a pastor or something?
Why does it bother you so much that your deacons want the parishioners to be safe?

10. My parishioners would be safe. It's not snowing all that hard.
I came here from Northern Iowa, and this weather wouldn't even have caused them to consider closing school or canceling worship--because next week there might be a REAL storm. I just don't get canceling everything over flurries. And that's what we're getting right now--flurries.

16. here is what I am thinking...
You may be from Northern Iowa, but where are you now?

You may know how to safely drive in the current conditions, but do they?

I remember being in Virginia during a snowstorm once, people in jeeps were in the ditch, I was driving a little red convertible sports car and was getting along fine because I have experience driving in the snow being from MN.

Different people have different experiences.

You should take that into account.

14. Well... it's treacherous here now. We're 24 hours in and have another few to go.
Winds up to 40 MPH and a LOT of snow - maybe 10 inches (with drifts of several feet) so far and piling on quickly now.

The 2 major shopping malls are closed which is monumental as that's usually a hang-out when all the kids are home for a snow day.

Have you checked in with your dad since last night? I hope he's safe and sound. There are some power outages. It's worst in the South East portion of the state:

19. I wonder if you will get what we have--a foot on the ground and
the winds are supposed to pick up tonite. All schools closed again--second time in a week which is very unusual. (northwest suburban Chicago) Good luck!

20. They closed Milwaukee today
We easily have a foot on the ground, huge drifts, gusting winds. Much more snow on the way.

They closed all the schools, our daycare, my work, and the malls.

I repeat. THEY CLOSED THE MALLS!!!

I am snowbound in the house. I live on a dead end street that has not yet been plowed.

22. You're not buried in snow!!!
:hi:

Awaiting confirmation on the same from a few other area DUers close to my heart... it's a mess out there.

It sucks, but a wise DUer stated the following:

"I'll take this over flooding, tornado, hurricane, mud slides, earthquake

This does not enter my house, nor does it destroy my house.

It is a hassle, and we're tired of it, but I haven't lost any possessions or cars or my home!"

We'll get through it.

23. Just talked to my dad ( just N. of Chi.) ---said its snowing so hard
that visibility is about a half a block, and 12-14 inches are expected by time its over. Could be worse though---Chama NM, up near the Colo. border has 10 foot drifts , and Gov. Richardson has declared a state of emergency in Rio Arriba County.
