question for you wordy people |
|
Dictionary.com tells me that the word "development" can also be spelled with an extra e: "developement".
Assuming they're not messing with my head, does anyone know why? I tried looking it up, but I couldn't find anything on it so now it's bugging me and I need to know the answer. Other online dictionaries don't spell it with the extra e though.

It's the same issue as some places call the big thing you sit on in the living room a "sofa" instead of a "couch".

I often type 'developement' with my Fred Flintstone-like dexterity, but that don't make it right.

17. I did read somewhere.... |
|
that there are many British words with an "e" that is dropped from the American spelling. I wonder how I could confirm if this is the case for developement/development.
I have no idea why I'm obsessed with figuring this out.

Just check the Oxford English Dictionary - no 'developement'. The original spelling boosted from the French circa 15th century was developpement.

21. Checked my French/English dictionary. |

The current French spelling is still developpement. I would say dictionary.com made a wee error or typo.
