I am in so much pain and I am mad too...
I teach and on my lunch break I HAVE to leave campus to smoke so I was walking to my vehicle and slipped on the ice. I had the door open so I caught myself between my car door and the drivers seat and door frame. I didn't fall completely but totally torked my back

when I went to report it our principal said "other teachers chose not to leave today because they knew it was slick. It is not our duty to clean the parking lot. You should have been more careful"

now...I do NOT want a work comp claim ect...I just thought they ought to know how bad it was

but I thought that was pretty crappy treatment

so tomorrow, I am going to the doctor and staying home and they better NOT charge me a day for it

I am in horrible pain and really sore

1. Oh, Christ, you're in for it now. You're gong to get 97 replies telling you that
it's YOUR fault, because you're one of those EVIL SMOKERS.

6. Teaching 148 eighth graders? I'd need a whole pack at lunch and another when
school let out in the afternoon.

5. Everyone at my school was fairly certain that our principal did that.
To this day I can't think of anything to convince me otherwise. :P

3. Yeah, I'd call that pretty crappy treatment.
Especially since you were just reporting the problem and not threatening to sue or anything.

9. "It is not our duty to clean the parking lot."
I highly doubt that's true. I suspect it *is* their duty.

22. If they admit that the parking lot needed cleaning, they are admitting that it was a hazard
and that they knew about it and did nothing.

Which could be an opening to a lawsuit. Stinky stuff.

10. Were there those yellow caution signs in each parking spot?
Because if not, I also suspect it's their responsibility to create a safe working environment, regardless of why you went out to the car.

12. when I get that kind of reaction from people
it's really tough for me not to cry. I usually expect people to be decent and respectful. I'm sorry you had to deal with that on top of your injury.

MEAN PEOPLE SUCK!

13. It IS their duty to clean the parking lot.
If it was a kid who fell, they'd get their asses sued.

14. File a claim
Make someone commit in writing that either they were not required to clean the parking lot - or they accept responsibility for failing to do so. Talk to an attorney. It isn't about the money. It's about the fact they lied to deny responsibility when they have a duty to maintain common areas in a safe manner.

they had someone there cleaning it

16. Question is
would you tolerate that kind of deception from a student without challenging it? If not then you need to file the claim.

My opinion of course.

Hope you feel better soon. Been there. Nothing much to compare to back pain ......

17. Sounds like some of the "princes" that i've had...

Real jerks. Glad you're seeing a doctor. Back injuries can
cause problems down the road. And while i don't smoke, can
appreciate you needing a fix if you teach junior high. z

19. That is really crappy treatment.
 I hope your back gets better really soon, and that they don't give you any crap about it - I would think that keeping the parking lot clean definitely *IS* their responsibility, so I don't know why they're being so snotty about it. :( Lots of hugs and good vibes to you! :pals:

24. File a workmen's comp claim. Back injuries are tricky. Sometimes you
think you weren't really hurt that bad, and then problems come back to haunt you.

My hat's off to anybody with the courage to be a teacher. :hi:
