So I finally got to sit down, watch "Xanadu".
Why is this movie hated so much?!

Quirky, yeah.

Ahead of its time? You bet.

A handful of cringe-worthy moments? Which movie doesn't have these?

One or two small role characters acted out blandly? Inevitable.

The "musical" was never a genre I particularly liked. Yet, 2 songs aside, "Xanadu" is grossly underrated.

1. Retroactive hatred stemming from the director's later works, like "Outfoxed."
He has made many left-wing documentaries that have made conservatives mad at him. They deliberately overlook the pleasures of his earlier work, such as Xanadu. You know the poem: "When Kubla Khan did a stately pleasure dome decree across the big lake Gitchee Gumee on the Shining Big Sea Water."

2. It's amazing how Robert Greenwald went from "Xanadu" to documentaries.
A couple of months back, Entertainment Weekly did an article about "Xanadu" (regarding the opening of the Broadway stage musical based on the movie). Most people associated with the film today regard "Xanadu" as a sort of misguided mess. But I have a great amount of affection for it.

I won't go to New York to see the stage musical...God knows how much tickets are. But if it tours and comes to Chicago... :-)

3. I can only imagine...
...how much cocaine was being snorted during every phase of that film. Piles of coke being lined up for the producers as the story was being pitched. "Great idea!" Big rails of coke for everyone in the movie. "Wow, this film's going to be great!"

Xanadu would never have happened without a couple pounds of cocaine.

4. I didn't know it was so "hated". Maybe because people don't understand how to pronounce its name?
 I put it in the same category as Rocky Horror Picture Show.

11. My heartiest sympathies for your plight.
I know Stockholm Syndrome when I see it. Identifying with Olivia Newton-John is one of the warning signs, and PRST will only slow your healing.

14. I know, I know. But you must understand that that's the roller disco talking, son.
Let it out, and let it go.
