4. I have a theory.

I think that DU itself gives out a single heart to those who don't have one, doling out a certain number of hearts at a time. I think the rationalization is to make people without hearts feel better and to assauge complaints of it being a "popularity contest," but I think the real reason is to encourage them to buy hearts in return for the people they think might have bought them the auto-generated heart.

I think it's a clever and successful marketing ploy.

Okay, seriously though... thank you to whomever gave me the heart. But for the record, I'm not a fan of the "popularity contest" feeling it can create, so I don't buy them for anyone. Which does not mean I love you any less, dammit!
