Antony and the Johnsons anyone? (Mellow music, I promise)
Been listening to this for days now, and it's growing on me like a fungus (among us). Waaaay outside of my usual fare. Hell, even me mum might like this stuff.

What say you?

Anyone? Beuller? Beuller?

3. It reminds me of Nick Cave crashing into Johnny Mathis.
And I notice the music may sound sweet, but the lyrics seem kind of dark (which is a good thing in my book). I don't know the song titles because I just have a burnt copy at the moment, but I'll look for the song you mention.

They're totally new to me, and I'm digging what I'm hearing a lot. I love when I hear something I wouldn't normally associate with my kind of music that blows me away. I can already tell I'll be listening to these guys a LOT.

2. I saw them live years ago.
The first time at Joe's Pub where he blew me away.

The second when they opened for Le Tigre somewhere in Brooklyn. Worst performance ever. I think it was the crowd. They were an odd choice for an opening act.

4. I've seen that happen to other bands too.
I remember seeing the band Sunn O))), a REAL slow, droning, ambient band, and they had a thrashy black metal band (Nachmystium) open for them and they didn't really work well together (though it made me get into Nachmystium personally). Quite a few Sunn O))) fans seemed lost during the opening act.

Always hard to judge bands live anyways. I've seen great bands suck live, and sucky bands be great live. Go figure. :)

Ask Angel up above. We were married and she can tell you the cold hard facts of my musical tastes. It SHOULD scare you, but not this one. :P

21. Any of the death metal ones, I'm sure.
Be glad you left before Donnie gave me Infidel!/Castro? . It's not the cookie monster stuff as there's no vocals at all, but it IS the most messed up and harsh listen you might ever hear. Took me 8 months to start liking it. And naturally I love it now.

13. Hey cool, glad you liked it.
Not my normal type of selection mind you, but good music is good music. Can't fight it...we have to just give in to it's power over us mere mortals. :)

I can already tell this is something I'll be into down the road. I like stuff that sounds like it could be normal, but just isn't quite there, thankfully.

Of course, Pig Destroyer put out my favorite CD of the year, so what the hell do I know? :D

12. looooove him
Something about his voice will rip my heart right out sometimes. If he has a show anywhere near me I'll go, I can't wait to see him.

All of his songs are beautiful but this one makes me want to cry just thinking about it  I love Antony.

14. Yeah, that's a good song.
I listened to that earlier today. Really nice stuff. I'm really liking what I'm hearing.

This may be outside your range of musical tastes, but here's something you might like, vocal wise at least. Michael Gira (from The Swans, and then The Angels Of Light) has very personal and at times kind of dark lyrics, but I find his voice haunting, and that's what's attracting me to Antony and the Johnsons right now. His voice is mesmerizing me, like Gira does, and that's high praise from me. Trust me. :)

15. ooh I love him!
I've never seen this video though thank you! I saw Angels of Light in Atlanta one time but it was almost 10 years ago. God Damn the Sun will always be one of my favorite songs :headbang:

One voice that reminds me of this is the singer of Myssouri, a band from Atlanta. I just looked on itunes and none of their old songs from when I first listened to them are there :( But if you can get Blindly, or Open Contempt or My Eye I bet you'd love them too.

17. If you only knew how often I truly said, "God Damn the Sun."
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 10:57 PM by Forkboy
I hate summer. :) There's a video for Blind taken in Boston. I'm the shoulder on the right hand side of the screen. :D

Myssouri is a weird name for a Georgian band, but I'll check... ;)

Gotta love Myspace...

Listening to "Catalog Of Woes" right now. It reminds me of a Nick Cave sound mixed with 16 Horsepower. I'm liking this!

Ok...this is really good. "Wet The Red Lane" is right up my alley! I can't tell you how cool this sounds.

Ok, I see they're done as a band, but there's a link to new goodies, Antic Clay...one moment. :)

Soooo...Antic Clay's song "Clean Blues" is sounding mighty fine too. I think you're on to something, as opposed to me, who is just on something. This is like Southern Culture On The Skids unplugged..in a good way!

Wow...all this stuff is really, really cool. Thank you so much. New cool music to me is the ultimate gift, and you've just given me something to investigate much further. This is some really cool stuff.

Thanks!!!!! :hi:

18. I just last night found that stuff too
.. the stuff about what's become of Myssouri. They never got super famous anyway, but a few of their songs really will always stand out to me. And I haven't looked them up for so long, it's almost eight years since we moved from Atlanta. I'm gonna look into Antic Clay more and get "Clean Blues"!

I HAVE to tell you something funny that happened a few minutes ago. I was in the kitchen trying to heat up some coffee I'd left on the counter but instead I dropped the glass and it spilled under the fridge where I can't clean it up and my husband started singing the "Failure" song. It's a joke he has, singing in a low voice "whatever you did wrong, OF FAILURE.."... I think it was "the cold cold coffee.. of FAILURE.." this time  It was funnier because I listened to them so much last night.

I love 16 Horsepower. I know there's other great stuff out there but I don't know how to find out about it, I pay attention to what people say on DU though hehe

22. Both The Wire magazine and Skyscraper magazine are great sources of music info.
They cover everything, and it's where I get info on a lot of what I listen to.

19. I've been listening to Myssouri just now
Their best album is called Malamerica and it's not available on iTunes but "My Eye" and "Blindly" are two songs that are so great.. I bet you'd like them, they have that Western-sounding guitar thing.. I don't know, I'm not a musician but anyway those two songs are worth getting (well worth recommending anyway! :))
