I lived under his government for eleven years and hated every day of watching the news and seeing him and his racist, reactionary, neo-conservative, Bush-loving government seek to destroy everything that was wonderful about Australia. Imagine having a smarter version of Bush for eleven years in power and you kind of get the picture. His right wing accolytes in the press spent years trying to discredit the Stolen Generation and trying to sweep it under the carpet
To be fair though, I don't wish death upon him. I want him alive for days like this so he can watch all the values and ideals that he cherished so dearly and thought he had made permanent be undone by our new government
Rudd also allowed an indigenous ceremony to welcome in the new Parliament for the first time in its history
We've got a heck of a long way to go on reconciliation and improving the quality of life for indigenous people and this is just the first step in what will be a very long process. But it is a start and I hope it brings some comfort, healing and closure to the people and the families involved.
