Gas was $.36 a gallon.
You could get a loaf of bread for less than a quarter.
And a gallon of milk went for $.63.
Minimum wage was a buck sixty an hour.
Median family income was nine grand and change.
I was making about 2/3 of that, but went to over twice that in 1970.

39th anniversary coming up in April and things have changed a little since way back then.
:-)

11. It's probably more her fault than mine.
She cuts me a LOT of slack.

x(

Many congratulations to you!!! :yourock:

I'm surprised that - what with you being a self-described liberal/Democrat, and therefore anti-family - that you stayed married for more than 20 minutes. You're not a very good Democrat, you know.

(And, technically, I couldn't get a loaf of bread for less than a quarter in 1969)

5. (technically) y'all are probably a yankee then.
You could get 'day old' bread (I think it was much fresher than that) at the Merita Bread Company bakery (sponsors of The Lone Ranger radio program) for 20 cents in Birmingham.
We'd ride down on our bikes and buy a loaf and eat the WHOLE goddam thing.
Just PIG!
And the smell of the bakery, for about 3 blocks around, was...
HEAVENLY.

:P

I have just the barest memory of milk being delivered to our home - it must have stopped when I was two or three.

(though I am a Yankee, yes)

9. Midnight Cowboy won best picture Oscar.
John Wayne for 'True Grit'.
Not so much for his performance (I think) but just a tribute to his stuff over the years. He was dying and everybody knew it.
"Hey, let's give him a big send-off."
I did kinda like the movie.

10. Correction: Minimum wage was $1.65
And I was making about $32 per month with my paper route.

When I turned 18 in 1974, minimum wage was $2.50. That's what I made pumpin' gas and workin' in a convenience store.

I ran some numbers awhile back and calculated that to keep pace with the CPI, minimum wage today should be about $10.75.

12. NOT according to my 'official' greeting card.
"1969 was a very good year"
I consider that Kalan Greeting Cards of Lansdowne. PA to be the ultimate authority.

15. according to the inflation calculator
http://www.bls.gov/cpi/
$100 in 1969 is equal to $564.96 today

so, in today's money
gas $2.03
