As I am a newcomer, I haven't learned the ins and outs of DU just yet. If you wouldn't mind pointing me to that recipe group, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, LeftyMom.

21. Thanks, LeftyMom and Dad - Sounds good!
Thank you!

*LeftyDad's favorite chili*

Use a big stockpot for this, if it makes too much it freezes well. To start crumble and brown one chub of Gimme Lean Sausage style, then add one large chopped yellow or white onion, one or two (depending on size) bell peppers cut up and some garlic. When the onions are starting to clarify add 28 ozs (2 normal cans or one big one) of crushed tomatoes with green chilis, two cans (drained and rinsed) of black beans and two cans (drained and rinsed) of pinto beans. If things look thin add a bit of tomato paste.

Once all the main ingredients have heated through it's time to add seasonings. At this point I add frontier brand mexican seasoning (I buy it in bulk at the health food store) to taste (I think I use about 2 tbsps but I can't promise that's right,) a pinch of red pepper flakes, a tablespoon or two of blackstrap molasses (the secret to the smoky sweet taste of my chili) and a splash of tamari.

Then I let it simmer a bit longer and fine-tune the seasoning if required. It's good with tortillas, over rice, with cornbread... I'm hungry now. LeftyMom

Chili (or chile) recipes are fun to compare, don't you think?

:-)

You for sure have a secret ingredient that sounds most wonderful: "a tablespoon or two of blackstrap molasses (the secret to the smoky sweet taste of my chili)"

I bet that is the secret ingredient that makes the baked beans SO good from www.smokehouse.com. I don't care for baked beans, but these are so smoky-sweet, it must be your secret ingredient they also use.

;-)

22. That is a VERY old post. He's no longer in the picture, though we're friends.
Anyhow, he can't boil water, it's only his favorite recipe to eat (kindly don't tell his mother.)

5. I like good chili.
So basically, if my dad cooks it, yes. If my mom cooks it... no. :P

Never tried to make it since I moved out on my own though... maybe I should.

11. When I was a kid I washed dishes in a five-star-restaurant
at a ski resort. The head Chef competed in a chili cook off in the local village. He brought some back and that was the best chili I have ever eaten! What's really wild is the Chef didn't win, he didn't even place. Wonder what the winning chili tasted like?

18. Some really good chili recipes here at link
http://www.g6csy.net/chile/recp-texas.html

Real Texas Chili 1
Real Texas Chili 2
Real Texas Chili 3

I have a Real Texas chili cookoff winner cut out from a 1970's Family Circle magazine saved in one of my recipe books. I think it's #1 above, but I'd have to check. Unique, to say the least, but it is the best. Very thick texture - It's mostly meat and spices. Wrap in a tortilla - mmm.

20. love it, love it. Make good chili myself. Hot. Garlicky. Spicy.
I use ground bison or xtra lean beef
I use fresh chili peppers (jalapeno, serrano and Poblano)
lots of cumin and good chile powder

black beans
diced tomatoes, onion, garlic.
sometimes a dash of red wine
sometimes some lime juice

fresh cilantro added just before serving.

The fresh peppers make so much difference.
