4. Uno has something extra going for him.
Not only is he beuatifully conformed and impeccably groomed and handled, he's got 'TUDE! Gotta love a dog with 'tude. I've been watching him and he's very impressive ... huggable and fun.

6. Well, my second favorite was the Weimaraner.
The Akita was my third favorite. The Weimaraner was in perfect sport condition and perfectly presented Weimaraner traits.

The feathering on Uno's tail is perfectly good. Beagles don't have the same tail standard that Labs (an "otter tail") do.

30. Story about him this year
Sorry, I don't have the link (I think it was on MSNBC.com). Sort of a "where are they now" on some of the past winners. Mick has spent the past few years breeding champions (as can be expected). A recent health problem lead to his castration. But before that happened, his owners put a lot of his semen on ice. He now is fully retired and lives the life of a treasured pet.

36. More about the tail ... Uno's is ideal according to the standard.
The AKC standard for the tail:
Set moderately high; carried gaily, but not turned forward over the back with slight curve; short as compared with size of the hound; with brush.

Defects: A long tail. Teaport curve or inclined forward from the root. Rat tail with absence of brush.
Clearly, it's not a "rat tail" and it has "brush" ... and its position and length seem ideal.

I know the standard for Labradors describe the ideal as an "otter tail" and describe "feathering" (like a Golden's) as a defect.

Uno is a complete beauty ... even though I have more favorite breeds, personally.

He's an EXTRAORDINARY example of the breed, imho. Really beautiful ... and doggy! He's got all the ideal characteristics of the breed, especially the temperament.

16. I think the judge made a good choice...
Though I loved the Australian Shepherd too. I would have had a tough time judging any of the competitions. There were so many true champions. I also loved the Chesapeake Bay Retriever.

13. I love dog shows.
I'll never forget when I visited my first dog show about 35 years ago. I was amazed that the owners/breeders actually like PEOPLE to play with and hug their dogs when they were on the benches. "Hug a Husky!" was one sign I remember. When I saw the Newfoundlands stetched out in the bench and there were three kids between the ages of three and five were rolling over them and playing, I was tickled at how the Newfies just put up with the kids with good-humored patience. The only "stand-offish" dogs were the toys and miniatures ... in cages.

That's about the same time I got interested in show standards - for the larger breeds. It turns out that temperament is a HUGE element in mmost standards, at least for working, sporting, and larger breeds. "Socialization" is key to developing a show dog. Breeders obsess about it. Dog shows are one of my favorite places to visit. Rather than being snooty and hyper-esocteric, they're enormously friendly. I can't imagine a dog-lover not enjoying one immensely.

20. Perfect night for me!
Both of my candidates won.

I love Uno! What a great dog. Wish I could've heard his bays of joy! I love the way a beagle bays. They should've had a mike close to him. He was definitely the crowd favorite. Glad he beat the frou-frou poodles, nothing against the poodles I just hate those cuts.

29. "May we have the beagle, please?"
About time we heard that sentence! The best part is that Uno didn't leave his personality at the door. At the breed competition, he tried to chew a sign, play with his fellow competitors and bayed at the crowd. During the best in show judging, he bayed at the judge and jumped in the air, offering to play.

And the crowd's reaction was awesome. People yelling "Uno!" as he was walked around, and the standing ovation when he won. I've watched the telecast for over 15 years, and I've never seen anything like it.

Enough with the standoffish posh breeds. America needs a playful beagle, now more than ever!

33. I never saw the crowd so behind one dog before, either.
I'm always appreciative of the Westminster audience. A critical mass of dog-lovers has to be good for the world, imho. Uno won over the crowd early on in the competition and might be the most popular winner ever.

I have a neighbor with two Beagles ... a couple of lovable clowns she dearly cares about. It'll be interesting to hear her reaction. And theirs.
