I fucking hate my job sometimes |
|
Some of you know that I work as a student finance planner for an auto tech school. We partner with the National Hot Rod Association, and they're having a race in Phoenix next weekend. Our school's going to have a booth there, and the boss asked for volunteers to go work it for a few hours for overtime. Sounds like fun, right? Except a) I despise car racing of any sort, I would rather be forced to drink turpentine than go to one of those things and b) I live clear across town from the racetrack and do not drive, and public transport out there is non-existent. So I didn't volunteer.
I checked my email when I got into the office today to discover that I'd been "volunteered" for this bullshit. The email was very sneaky and made it sound like it was an optional thing for me because I didn't volunteer, but when I brought up to my boss that I have no way of getting out there I was basically told to suck it up and get a ride with one of the people that's going. :argh:
Aside from the practical concerns, I'm extremely anti-social (despite the couple of DU meetups I went to. :P). I have no desire to be social with my students or with my colleagues. And all three of the people I have to choose from for a ride are born again fundies, one of which told me I was flaunting my "lifestyle" by showing a picture of my girlfriend to a friend of mine at work, and tried to proselytize said friend on another occasion. Another is a raging freeptard who worships O'Rly and Hannity and is just generally a dick. Option 3 is a woman who lives close by and is relatively nice but is extremely nosy and I'd rather not have to spend 45 minutes each way in a car with her trying to dodge prying questions about my personal life. I take enough crap about being Goth that I keep the other stuff to myself.
I'm really infuriated by all this.

1. Had I any advice to give other than maybe 'start looking for a better job', I'd give it. :( |
|
 that's all I got for now.

3. I really can't get out of Arizona fast enough |
|
I may just bite the bullet and break my lease this summer if things keep going the way they are.

5. Check and see if there's any way you can get out without breaking the lease |
|
i.e., subleasing or something to that extent. I got lucky, my lease allowed the person with a lower income in the apartment to leave without the lease being broken... and just that year my roommate got a better job and my freelance work dried up. So while I'd spent a few months grumbling about the fact that my roommate was suddenly making more money than me, it turned out to be to my advantage. :)

Step 2: Put on headphones
Step 3: Spend your OT money on something fun for yourself that you've been wanting!

It's kinda cosmic that you work at an auto related school and don't drive :) Depending on your personal situation you have a choice. They cannot 'make' you volunteer. You can do it on your own or get paid for it...........

15. I didn't know WyoTech was in Phoenix |
|
Thought it was in Wyo.
I like that one dude in the commercial with the '55 Chevy: "All my friends think I'm crazy, but I just think it's fun."
Anyway, I am empathetic to your woes. The last newspaper I worked for had booths at the business expo and the county fair. Everyone was "volunteered" to work these, over my protests of "We're in editorial, not advertising or circulation."
(I got into an argument with a crazy woman at the fair one year. She was going on about how "liberal" the paper was about some politician when, in fact, we had no political stance.)

16. I work for WTI Guide Services, which is here in Phoenix |
|
Mainly because it's kind of a central location to support all the campuses from. We've actually got campuses all over...the main one's in Laramie but there's also ones in Sacramento and outside of Pittsburgh. There's a couple of specialty campuses too--Oakland does aviation and Daytona Beach does motorcycles. My kids are mostly Sacramento students, actually.
The messed up thing is I wouldn't actually mind working the booth, it's the fact that I'm EXPECTED to give up my one day that I have to run errands to somehow make my way to the track and do work. Shit, I went all the way up to Flagstaff one weekend when I worked at Chase to work a company booth with the rest of the LGBT employee group at the Pride festivities (Chase was one of the sponsors). We gave free credit counseling. Of course, that was definitely more my kind of crowd. :)

If they said, "Hey, y'wanna go do this?" and offered some incentive, like maybe comp time... but noooooooooooooo! They gotta write it ad hoc into your job description. :eyes:

14. Well it is a good job for the most part |
|
Aside from this my boss is pretty laid back and cool and we get to basically screw around on the internet all day as long as we get our work done.

Ask her questions about herself, keep her talking, and that way she won't pry as much and she'll think you're a fascinating person.
I grew up in Tempe, and hated going to the west side. You have my empathy. It's NOT a short drive.

19. It sucks having no car in the southwest |
|
:(
I don't drive, but praise be to Allah I have a free bus sticker for SD metro buses around UCSD. The bus routes here aren't bad, but once University City gets SD trolley service, good god I'll be going to downtown a couple times every week. Hopefully Hillcrest and Balboa Park get some love as well.
My brother moved in with me, and he has a car, so I take advantage of that sometimes, but to be honest a good portion of this country could live without a car.
