Jane Fonda American Culture and the "C" word. |
|
Jane let slip the dreaded anglo-saxon word for vagina on the air while discussing of all things her role in The Vagina Monologues and it has become a huge stink (!) in the media with multiple apologies etc. Had she said 'dick' nothing much would have happened. Over in england calling somebody a cunt is rather routine. What the heck is wrong with us?

1. i think if she had said "dick" except in the context of cheney it would still be a stink |

america and england, two nations divided by a common language and all that
just because it isn't so rude in england doesn't mean it isn't vulgar here and vice versa, however, when i'm 70, i imagine i'll make some slip-ups myself, hey, wait a minute, i do already, so i'm not inclined to crucify the woman
to my eye the c-word, once just another naughty term, has become increasingly vulgar and offensive, at least in the south, you might have used it in informal conversation in 1970 but i wouldn't use it now except in pillow talk w. an intimate, just my feeling about it tho but i think more and more people find it honestly offensive instead of just another swear so why hurt people if they're hurt by it

2. We've become a reactionary society |
|
With the majority of our information coming instantly and in "OMG!" fashion, we've learned to react rather than to think and analyze.

3. You can't say "cunt" on live morning TV in America... |
|
...at this time. Jane knows this objectively, but maybe she didn't care. Interesting to see what happens. Will the network be fined? I'm not sure how the FCC views words versus images (Janet Jacskon's nipple at the Super Bowl).
Hey, if it were up to me, you could show hard-core anal sex 24/7. Why not? It happens. "Cunt" happens. "Nipple slip" happens.

Heaven knows it's getting harder for our representatives to avoid real work.

7. Interesting, isn't it? |
|
Anyone can say "vagina" on teevee at virtually any time. Oprah can say "vajayjay" because it's cute and... well, she's Oprah.
"Cunt" means precisely the same thing as both those, but it's one of The Seven Words.
Also, "crap" is permissible on teevee, but not "shit." What's the difference?

8. Saving Private Ryan was on TBS a few days ago. |

The soldiers were able to say 'shit' and all its variants but the censors bleeped 'fuck'.
Very strange.
On edit: Wasn't bleeped; the line 'Fuck Hitler' was overdubbed as 'Forget Hitler'

I think it's a disgusting word. If she wants to say it, say it in private conversations off the air.
