My sister is saying goodbye to her best friend today
and it's breaking all of our hearts.

Nell is a toy poodle who has been w/ my sister for 12 years. My sister adopted her when she was 7 or 8. She had been neglected.

With my sister, she thrived. She never learned how to play like a dog, but she was warm and fed and walked and loved.

All Nell ever wanted out of life was a walk and a lap. My sister gave her that. And she loved my sister for it. For all that my sister has been through over the years, Nell has been there for her.

Nell is very old now and her health is failing. The ailments are accumulating: skin conditions, falling, shaking, losing weight.

My sis feels that she needs to let Nell be at peace. She's lived a long and good life, and she's been a faithful friend and companion.

Rest well, trusted friend. You'll be missed.

6. Well, that just broke my heart.
Nell looks almost exactly like my Poco, the toy poodle of my childhood. Poco, though, had apricot ears. He was the first animal companion I ever truly loved and my heart ached profoundly when he had to be euthanized.

Millie, I hope your sister will find ways to celebrate Nell's life. Nell looks like a friend worth celebrating.

7. Here's a poem the vet gave us when we said goodbye to Isis.
The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
Don't let the grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend
And stay with me, if you can, to the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see....

The rest is here :

And here's our Isis. I know how it hurts.

11. The amazing thing about animal lovers is that we keep bringing them into our lives....
Knowing that we are going to be heart-broken again all too soon.

Nell and your sister were both blessed in the time they had.

10. It's a hard decision to make
We said goodbye to one of our cats last week. As I said in another post, their suffering would be greater than your guilt for making the decision.

RIP, Nell.

12. Dear Nell
Nell was so lucky to get real love after being neglected. Your sister rocks for adopting her and I'm glad their paths crossed, you know!
We have to outlive so many animals but we can give them a good life while they're here, so soon your sister will just think back to the good times Nell had instead of the sad part :loveya:

13. Nell will be at peace.
You and your sister will be in my thoughts because like so many of us, we've had to let go of one of our beloved family members. Mine was 7 years ago and I still laugh and cry when I see pictures of my cat. I called him my baby although he was 15 1/2 when it was time for him to go.

21. Best wishes to your sister
The fact that she could take an abused dog and help her live to almost 20 is amazing! She will get her reward.
