"In an Old House"

In an old house with many fireplaces
That my father took me long ago to visit,
A stairway from the first floor to the third
Slanted, dark, inwalled without a landing.
Nothing else charmed me like that climbable closet
Built, I thought, for one who would have explored
The shuddery penetralia of caves.
"For servants," they told me, after all my guesses,
Who crept between the scrubbing and the mending
And had a story left out of their lives.
