Dryer Balls?
Normally, seeing a "as seen on TV" sticker on a product in the store would be a turn off.

But I was intrigued by the idea of having rubber balls with spikes tumbling in the dryer to reduce statics.

We are having too many items, these days, that say "no fabric softener" and the recommended temp. for washing and for drying go from hot to cold. If they are light, athletic cloths than all will be washed cold and air dried. But a new heavy towel that is to be washed cold and, of course, no softener, will have to be tumbled dried.

Anyone has tried these balls?

4. I use them everyday
I cant remember the last time I bought fabric softener.

They seem to work, but they can be noisy. Sounds like you are tumbling tennis shoes sometimes. Other than that, they are great.

and thanks for a mature reply... I know that the lounge sometimes sounds like a high school locker room but thought that these are limited to the early morning hours..

16. My main problem with them is that they started to smell after a while.
Edited on Fri Feb-15-08 10:13 PM by Fenris
I bought a set from Gaiam (not the same as advertised on TV, I believe) and while they were okay after a while they gave our clothes a nasty, burnt plastic scent. They kept the static down, but I didn't notice any benefit over softener. YMMV, however.

21. why no fabric softener on a new heavy towel?
maybe i'm old fashioned, but i'd say screw it! i downey everything.

(and i don't use a dryer--don't have one, so everything air dries--therefore, i don't really have an opinion/advice on anything to soften clothes in the dryer. although i did read that fabric softener sheets help to keep away mosquitoes)

22. You are not supposed to use fabric softener on towels as it reduces their
absorbing capacity. I use the fabric softener to reduce statics rather than to soften clothes.

Since December we have had only a few days there the temp. rose above freezing in the Twin Cities of Minnesota so hanging the laundry outdoor is not an option.. Plus there is still a foot of snow in the back yard. And the basement is not big enough to air dry everything..

24. omg--if i didn't use fabric softener on towels they would be horrible
i guess we have hard water or unsoftened water

(i read baking soda softens clothes so i tried it on towels. nope. it didn't work. i need two caps of downey or else the towels are hard and stiff and rough.)

25. I love my dryer balls!
I've actually had to replace them b/c my first set wore out!

Drying time is lessened and I rarely use fabric softener (I'm sensitive to dyes/perfumes in laundry soap and fabric softener so I only use the no dye/no scent sheets).

Towels dry fast and soft - jeans dry fast and soft. (we have well water - and it's hard water - so this is quite a feat!)

Sometimes there is static so that's when I use the sheets.

They save money in drying time/less fabric softener!

Go for it!

26. FWIW, have you tried white vinegar in the rinse cycle?
I confess that I haven't tried this (mainly because the washer is in the basement, and I never seem to time it correctly to actually try this), but I've read that putting 1/2 cup of white vinegar in the fabric softner dispenser during the rinse cycle will soften the clothes - the aroma is supposed to dissapate prior to wearing.

34. I used to have a bunch of tennis balls bouncing around inside my
dryer. Seemed to fluff stuff up nicely. I see no need to buy special "implants." :) I was never bothered by too much static electricity. YMMV

35. I do not use them
however, fabric softener can make sheets and linens more apt to 'pilling'.
