2. Best cover I can recall hearing...
was back in 2000 at my high school's 'Battle of the Bands'. This punk band did a cover of a Backstreet Boys song. (Or maybe it was N'Sync, I can't tell the two apart.) It was friggin' hilarious.

I hurt myself today
To see if i still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But i remember everything

What have i become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone i know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear my crown of shit
On my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stain of time
The feeling disappears
You are someone else
I am still right here

What have i become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone i know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If i could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

44. Laibach's version of Queen's "One Vision"
Watch at least two minutes of the following two videos:

Queen's "One Vision": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJvNvBYTsGw

Laibach's "Geburt Einer Nation": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YE_j0xIsJA

Note that the Laibach version opens with a piece of the US national anthem because they believed the song to be about America. This is why they retitled it "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9UPOkIpR0A">Geburt Einer Nation".

For the record, what appears to be Nazi iconography is actually a satire on the totalitarian communist regime that the band members grew up under. The group formed in 1980's Yugoslavia and now lives in their native Slovenia (Laibach is the capital of Slovenia).

Detroit was the (short-lived) band Mitch Ryder formed after the Detroit Wheels broke up.

This is a cover of the Lou Reed/Velvets song, and (I think) Reed himself has said it is the best version of the song (his included!) that he has ever heard.

Just to shake people up a bit. It's kinda sad that some of the people that viewed that video considered it satanic!

63. I have many favorites
right now, my favorite is this one I discovered about 3 days ago: Death Comes Ripping, originally done by The Misfits, and redone by Cradle Of Filth for the Boondock Saints soundtrack.

:toast:

Every time I bring it up, it seems the person I'm talking to isn't familiar with the Elvis version. I have it on my playlist, and think it's one of the most powerful vocals ever.

76. "You Keep Me Hangin' on" by Vanilla Fudge
Many of their songs were pop songs that they "psychedelicized", making them longer, slower, and "heavier." Some of them work better than others; my favorites are their versions of "You Keep Me Hangin' on", "Some Velvet Morning", and "If You Gotta Make a Fool of Somebody."

The video link here is cool, and straight out of the late-sixties. I was trying to find the full version (it's around 7-minutes long; it was cut to less than three for the single), but this is the longest one with decent sound quality that I could find.

It helped that it was a live performance, but he really did justice and then some to the composer and the song.

87. Dylan's "Chimes of Freedom"
By the Byrds

Also the Byrds' version of Pete Seeger's "The Bells of Rhymney"

For political covers: Barack the Knife ("Mack the Knife"),
John McCain ("You're So Vain"), and The Evolution ("The
Locomotion") which are really parodies and not covers,

101. I adore Love Spit Love's version of How Soon is Now by the Smiths
Also, Juliana Hatfield's cover of Witches Song by Marianne Faithfull. The latter is light years better than the original. Both of them were on the soundtrack for The Craft, which was far better than the actual movie (though the MSTie in me loves the cheez, and Fairuza Balk). I'm still annoyed that the How Soon is Now cover was ripped off for one of the worst TV shows in the history of the medium, Charmed. :P

An honorable mention goes to goth band Collide's creepy cover of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane. I didn't like it at first but it really grew on me. I think it's the bass line that finally did it for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN1ELMxn1P4
