Need some vibes for "Lucy" again- she opened up her spaying stitches last night.
I had let her out last night to relieve herself without her "lampshade" last night. It had been four days since her surgery & she hadn't been paying any attention to the stitches so I mistakenly thought she would be ok. She didn't want to come in so I thought she would be ok outside. This morning she came in with the stitches open and some of her intestines hanging out. I just dropped her off at the vet, they are working on her right now.
I hate it that she has such a dumb ass for a human. I should have chased her down & carried her back inside. She had been couped up in the house all day because I had to work and she has so much energy she needed to work off.

Please send this girl some good vibes & cuss me out for being such an idiot.

4. It won't come off until the stitches are out this time.
I have had other females spayed and they didn't need the lampshade at all, never touched the stitches. I thought she would be Ok but that's what I get for trying to think.

3. LAMPSHADE LAMPSHADE LAMPSHADE!!!!
I know she gave you the eyes... but she is just trying to get you take off the lampshade ya softy!

*Shakes finger and looks stern* NO! Bad pet parent! No treat for WCross! (I won't spank you with a newspaper, dont worry)

I worked at a vet clinic, and this happens... well, every week. Now you've learned, and the next time your pet has Dr's orders to wear the lampshade, you won't let your cutie sweetalk you with her eyes and whines.

You're a great pet parent, and I can tell you really care about her... and I use the term pet parent because having a dog or cat is a lot like having a child. They depend on your care and love to nurture them... just like a growing infant. The good thing is that there are a lot of animal lovers here on DU - so anytime you have a question, feel free to post!

Sending loving lavender and pink healing vibes to Lucy, and soothing blue vibes to calm you and build your confidence!

Peace!
:hippie:

7. I need to be whacked upside the head with a newspaper- or ball bat.
I should have ignored her discomfort with the shade. I didn't have trouble with other females I have spayed in the past. When I dropped her off this morning they didn't seem surprised but I feel like crap for putting her through this. I'm worried about the risk of infection or if she perforated her intestine. I told them that money was not an issue, whatever it takes.

8. It didn't even seem to bother her, she was jumping around like nothing was wrong.
I was frantic this morning when I saw it, broke numerous traffic laws on the way to the vet. I hate it that she has to suffer due to my stupidity.

9. Update- She is back home & fine.
They told me it was common & that it wasn't her intestines but her stomach muscles that were exposed. I am going to have to give her antibiotics for a while.
They said there would be no charge for sewing her back up but a small charge for putting her to sleep for the procedure. I am planning on giving them 150 dollars next payday (when I get the stitches out) because I feel stupidity should have a price. I am going to ask them to use it to offset someones bill who they feel needs the help. They gave me a huge discount in the past when I had to spay/neuter six dogs & have them get their first shots. I will never forget Dr. West doing that for me so I will help him do it for someone else.

The "lampshade" is not coming off until after the stitches are out this time no matter what.

14. I'm so happy to hear this!
A vet told me once that the dogs and cats don't mind the lampshades as much as we think they do. I had to keep my little Tara on one for several months once because she had an ulcer in her eye. After a while I think they just consider it a part of them...just like we do with underwear!

It is going to stay on her head for the next 10 days no matter what.

16. Glad she's OK!

Our foster dog did the exact same thing -- while still at the vet clinic! So don't be too hard on yourself. :)

Hugs and scritches for Lucy!

Yes, she likes her ears rubbed, but mostly she likes just cuddling up. She looks kinda like this right this minute:

:D

Give Lucy a good scratchin' from me and Cocoa (aka PooPooHead)!

27. She's a rescued American Staffordshire Terrier
I don't have much background on her. We adopted her when she was about 9 months old. She had clearly been mistreated as she was VERY timid! She's still quite timid and definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, but she is as sweet as can be. One thing that helped her immensely was getting her a kitty. This is her bestest friend (next to me, of course), ninja-cat.

She's a very unique dog... doesn't bark. She has never barked. She has no CLUE how to bark. It's good and bad. Mostly good since I live in a condo.

OK, one more pic... last one, I swear.

13. Sending good vibes - been there, done that, have the worry lines
Years ago one of my German Shepherds had surgery on his hip and came home with a long incision on his upper rear leg. Right after we picked him up from the vet's office, my mom had to drive up to her sister's house in upstate New York and my car was in the repair shop. Anyway, the vet didn't mention using the protective collar and didn't send one home with him. For the first day or so, he didn't bother the incision, so I figured we were out of the woods. Then 3 days after the surgery, he licked half of the stitches out. The incision was open and I was freaking because I had no way to get him back to the vet's. Luckily a friend of mine was visiting her mom who lived next door and offered to take me, and the dog, to the vet's. She had shepherds of her own so her car was no stranger to dogs. The vet put in the needed stitches and gave me a collar and the silly beast was just fine. He lived for years (he was 6 when he had the surgery and died 7 years later) after the surgery and licking out his stitches. I know it's frightening, but try not to worry. I'm sure that Lucy Dog will be just fine and back to her old self quickly.

15. What had me worried the most is what I thought were her intestines.
I have known several people who have died from a septic infection from having their intestines perforated. Luckily it was just flesh. It scared the crap out of me, I was out of here to the vets so fast I am lucky I remembered to put my pants on! She is back to her old self now.

26. I always imagine the worst, that way I am not surprised.
I didn't know what I was looking at but I knew it was beyond my capability. (yikes!) Thank goodness for veterinarians!

She doesn't like the thing but she is going to learn to live with it.

30. Believe me, I understand
When my Shepherd's incision opened after he licked it, I could see muscle and that freaked the hell out of me. I am so glad to hear that Lucy is getting back to her old self. Just keep loving on her and she'll be fine. And so will you.

18. Oh my! Glad she's ok!
When my cat, Kyra, got spayed, I lived in fear of exactly that scenario. :scared: I made her keep the lampshade on for a week and a half. She hated it at first, but once she figured out how to eat and drink with it on, she didn't mind it at all.

I'm so glad that Lucy is fine!

28. Our Luna was a problem child about it too
She opened up her incision twice. After the second time the vet didn't want to have to sew her up again so she kept Luna at her office, free of charge, until she was healed and could come home.

Behave Lucy and you will be free in no time.
