21. Smaller laser diameter (from higher frequency) = more pits on disc = more info. |

Downloadable movies do not carry the resolution... to maintain standard-def quality, each DVD sold is about 8GB in size. Or 4GB for a bare bones movie with no extras that also runs under 2 hours...
Blu-ray is, what, 40GB per disc?

7. The picture is much clearer. You can see pores and zits on faces. |
|
I don't care about all of that, but my husband had to have it. He got it for Christmas. Plus the DVDs are $30 which sucks!

Both high-def have their good points, FWIW - both have the down point in that 99.9% of anything that benefits from the higher visual quality is crap.
Of course, 40 year old movies filmed on high quality stock can be digitally remastered and put to good effect on blu-ray, but still... I've only seen new movies come out in either format.
I would have chosen blu-ray anyway. James Bond is where it's at... The trek movie series isn't out in high def yet, the existing tv series (all of them) will come out eventually anyway, and Serenity being the only other entity of interest will be re-released on blu-ray anyway.

Chances of getting Fry's to exchange it are less than zero, I'm sure.

|
Hey, someone should be able to play the damned things. I waiting, but wanted the disks; they were on sale. Now I know WHY.
Don't even have the PLAYER, now I never will, so they're going to waste.

PM me, we'll figure something out.
We actually did okay on the thing, only paid $200 and got a bunch of movies free. Even if we never buy another HD-DVD, the free movies made it as good a deal as just buying a decent upscaling DVD player, so we'll probably move it to another room, use it for that, and get a Blu-Ray when the prices aren't quite so insane.

10. will this replace ALL regular DVDs or just high def? |
|
I'm really clueless. I personally don't give a rat's ass about high def. I'm perfectly content with the way things look now, especially if it means I don't have to pay more. Does this mean that regular DVDs are obsolete?

They won't phase out regular DVDs for years yet, and you'll have the ability to play them back for a good long time after that.
