Does ANYBODY in The Lounge (or DU elsewhere) LOVE their job? Check in here. |
|
Just wondering. All I've seen are posts about how terrible their jobs are. Don't get me wrong, I think most jobs are pretty awful.
But do you LOVE what you do in your job? And what do you DO in your job?

I work in Purchasing. Well ok, I'm the only person in purchasing lol. I always wanted an office job where I was doing things for my COWORKERS, not directly for customers. I hate dealing with customers! I never realized what I was looking for was purchasing until I got the job I have now 3 years ago. I love that I don't have to answer my phone if I don't want to (at least not for outside calls, I have to pick it up for inside calls from coworkers). I love getting product in fast for what we need, makes me feel good and it makes people happy. The people I work with are liberal dems, Obama supporters :D have a good sense of humour, know how to have fun, etc. My boss is really nice, is never up my ass. I get to work independently with no one down my throat, so while I work I get to play online all day too :o

It's nice that you get along so well with your coworkers. I think that's a big part of job satisfaction. That and a great boss and freedom on the job seem idyllic...

I can tell my coworkers off if they piss me off and not really get in trouble LOL. Can't do that with customers. If I'm stressed out in a bad mood they understand if I sound like I have an attitude...I am the only purchaser now so it can get very stressful. If I snapped at customers the way I sometimes snap at coworkers, I'd probably not have a job there anymore lol.

Whereas, with customers coming out of nowhere you have no relationship, also no control. I always try to remember that when I call some company to register a complaint cuz the person answering the phone is never the person responsible, just some low level clerk trying to do their job...

My husband doesn't want me to work at first - he says "Europe is only going to be new to you once - I want you to enjoy it!" I am an independent sort and feel uncomfortable not bringing money in. He wanted me to take a year off, I said no way, we're compromising to about 3 months off. It's going to be amazing!

And I love it. I've worked on the track since '69 and have loved it all.
I really like working with horses instead of people. My people skills are non existent.
The seven day a week thing is the only drawback. But I'd rather have a bad day at the track than a good day anywhere else.

|
I worked in the nonprofit sector all my working life. Lots of political organizations, health and human services. Some good, some great, some so-so, and a couple downright deadly.
Mostly, it's the people, isn't it? I found that in the nonprofit world, where I worked in Development (fundraising), my worst problems were with people who didn't know what they were doing. Fundraising is tough, altho it can pay well.

It takes a while before you "know what you want to be when you grow up" as the saying goes.
I fell into nonprofit sector jobs. I figured that if I could find a way to get a good paying job in a cause that I cared about, that would be great. So I consciously set out to learn all about fundraising. I figured that if I knew how to raise money, nonprofits would want to hire me. That was true, but the downside was the stress involved. Fundraising professionals last about 3 years on average in their jobs.
I retired recently, mostly health related. I don't know if I'll go back, part time, doing something with a nice nonprofit. I need some time to think about it (I have a pretty good income with Social Security and some investments).

|
I enjoy graphic design in theory. It's just that every graphic design job I've had has been nothing like any of the jobs I read about in Print or Communication Arts. *Those* graphic designers work in cool offices with game rooms and people hire them to do really cool stuff that ends up in design magazines. I work in one shithole after another for people who know nothing about design but want to tell me how to do my job (down to the smallest detail). I know I have talent and ability, but it's so rare that I ever get to use it. Most of my job involves trying to make shitty ideas and shitty artwork look remotely good.

I'm a graphic designer as well, BUT I am the only person in the entire company that does what I do, and I've been there forever, so I've earned a lot of respect as the only person who knows what's going on. I work with doctors, but through other departments, so I never deal with them directly and always have a manager to work through. I can pretty much design whatever I want (within budget) and since everything is always last-minute, my designs are never rejected. As an added bonus, I work at home two days a week.
Technology changes constantly, so I always get to learn new things. Plus, I get to work on various projects: medical journals, newsletters, advertisements, patient education material, CDs and I even work on a web project developing and designing lesson plans that teach kids in Texas about cardiovascular health.
I think the change is what I like best. If I was working on the same project everyday, I'd go batty.

But as I said, sometimes the job intervenes and you have a problem on your "Friday off"! That is a big problem, I found.
You have to assess the job very carefully, I think. If it involves people who will need your assistance during the entire week, you'll have a problem if you have a "4 day week."
It's not carefree, that's for sure.

I work in an international environment, have nice colleagues who speak lots of different languages, do a lot of the most creative work in the company, and have a great boss (from Belfast) who lets me work out of home one day a week. Business is good and my company is starting to give back more to the community. Next week about 20 of us will celebrate a colleague's birthday by going out for Korean barbecue, soju and karaoke. We have a good time, and get the work done, too.
I've been in a lot of crummy places, particularly in the publishing industry, and this job will always be the most enjoyable one.

I'm a biologist and university professor. I didn't start this gig until I was in my early forties, but now I can't imagine doing anything else. It is often stressful and the hours SUCK during the academic semesters, but the academic calendar more than makes up for the long hours during the semesters, IMO. I have intellectual freedom, grad students to keep me stimulated, etc. I love it. Not all the time, but that's OK.
