Anybody listen to Pandora radio? |
|
www.Pandora.com
In case you don't know what I'm referring to, Pandora is a free internet radio station that plays only music you like based on feedback you give it during your listening sessions - thus allowing you to discover new music based on your current preferences.
This website/station breaks down the elements of essentially all modern music identified in the "music genome project" and uses your feedback as a way to both play what you like and also suggest new music that you may not have been aware of previously.
Does anyone here use it? I love it so am just trying to spread the word.
It's totally free so try it out and see if you find any new music you like...

1. I've heard of it but never tried it; you've convinced me |
|
to give a try. Thanks! :hi: I was just thinking I was in a music rut. I don't have an iPod (and never intend to) and don't buy a lot of music just to try; this sounds like a perfect way for me to find stuff.

Just create a station by typing in your favorite song or artist, that'll keep you busy for at least a while...

I have a couple of stations that I've been fine tuning over the past couple of months.

It is so great to be able to listen to music I love even if I don't happen to own it.
It is nice to be able to create more than one station, too. I have a blues station and a classical station.

I don't know why but every time I use it I get a warning that my startup disk is almost full, no matter what number of other apps I have open at the time. I don't get it. Nothing gets downloaded, why does my machine warn me to close apps and reboot?
I have a folk station heavy on English and Celtic music, a Kinks station AND a Ray Davies station because Pandora assumes that if you like one Brit Invasion band you like them all so I have to block a lot of crap...a Robyn Hitchcock AND a Soft Boys station for similar reasons...and a Leonard Cohen station that stays surprisingly on target so long as I block the Smiths :puke:
I don't recommend taking their advice about seeding one station with all your favorite bands because it will go off on tangents that are soooo annoying. Though I have to admit, I had no idea the Left Banke recorded anything other than "Walk Away Renee" and "Pretty Ballerina."

6. I listened, but kept getting interruptions. What is the download speed? |
|
I suspect it is beyond my dial-up capacity.

Unfortunately since it is streaming radio dial-up may not be sufficient to transfer the data.
Sorry :(

It draws musical parallels that I might not have thought of, and you can customize it.

11. I have been turned on to some great bands I had never heard of |
|
The music I like rarely makes it to the radio, so Pandora has been a great resource.

12. I love Pandora radio! |
|
I first went to the site a couple of weeks ago when someone on DU recommended it. it's a great place to get music if you're an older person who doesn't keep up with the music scene. Most of my selections end up with country western music, so I guess I'm a fan in the closet.

13. It's great for all genres, not just the popular stuff |
|
I have some great classical stations that specialize in Baroque music on my station list. They really get specific in their categorizations...

It is a great concept, but I tend to listen to somafm.com instead and just let them feed me what they think is good music (it usually is, too.) :)
Both stations are still working hard in the fight against the RIAA and their attempt to strangle Internet Radio.
