The Bitch About Your Stupid Job Thread.
I gotta bitch. I have to. I hate my job.

I just finished my Masters in Biology. After I finished, I was lucky enough to work for my supervisor for about half a year. It was great...I got to do science, I had total control over how I spend my time, and I basically made my own hours (and I went everyday despite it being part time because I enjoyed it). Last month, my prof let me know that his dwindling grant money was getting low and that he would have to let me go with the caveat that he might have me back in a couple of months if his funding gets renewed.

Since last year, I've been looking and looking for work, but it has been extremely difficult. So this month I was forced to take a job at a call center. I give props to the people who do the job, and I have met some great people, but the job SUCKS.

Basically I take phone calls from irate Americans from the South Central region. The irate customers are bad enough...mean, ill-tempered, etc. But the corp sucks even more. Sucks big time. For our training, we were inundated with corporate propoganda in addition to learning the skills we need to answer technical and account questions. The corp keeps telling us how much they care about us, and how we are the reps of the company, but they monitor fucking EVERYTHING, pay a shitty wage, and discipline people for being a minute late back from break. The trainers are pretty nice, as are the other employees, but the tension and hatred in the place are palatable. Morale is terrible.

Anyways, I just had to bitch. Right now, I'm hating my life. I'm generally a pretty damn optimistic person, but this work is soul killing. I'm stuck because I can't quit and get behind on my student loan payments. I am in a really shitty mood. I'm just hoping to get an answer from somebody else soon.

So now, I'm gonna shut up and let you bitch about your job. Tell my why your job fucking sucks. Lol..maybe you'll make me feel better about my own.

2. Alas, few complaints for me

My boss is pretty cool, as are the people I work with. I work nights, so the bigwigs aren't around. Now I'm running a maching center instead of a bandsaw, so I'm a hell of a lot cleaner and can listen to my books on tape better.

Of course, there are always a few things. We used to work four tens, now it's five eights. I have less time with my kid now so my child support went up, but I'm making the same per week. Well, right now we're in overtime, so I work four tens and an eight, but you get the idea.

But as far as the company goes... our new 1.5 million dollar hydroforming machine has yet to make a sellable part. It sat idle for six months. Occasionally the service guys from Germany would come out and spend time on it, but it wasn't until two weeks ago that it was up and running. Only...

Turns out our customer made a slight design change in the part we hydroform. Only their sales rep never gave us the prints. So now we have to re-make $45,000 worth of tooling for the machine! It takes three weeks to make the tooling once the steel comes in (crosses fingers), then it has to be heat-treated and nitrated, then hand-polished before we can even TRY to make a piece!

And did I mention the damn thing drips? There's a lake of hydroforming fluid underneath it! i have this urge to get a little toy lifeguard's chair and put it on the "beach" on day. And of course the machine is too close to the ground to get a mop underneath it.

And with our old hydroformer there was the whole "wrong-sized docking rod" fiasco that has probably cost them a thousand man-hours to work around. Literally. Rather than just make a new docking rod for a few hundred dollars. :banghead:

And one of the owners/machine designers had a little english-to-metric confusion.

And they STILL won't get a damn extra angle-grinder for the shot floor!

But as far as my little segment of the shop? I'm quite happy swapping parts in the mill and deburring them. :-)

5. english-to-metric confusion?
It wasn't that .0004 again, was it?
Four tenths can be important.

10. :-)
No, it was bigger than that!

It was, I believe, four mounting brackets for hydraulic pistons.

The pistols are mounted to the bottom of the hydroformer's deck (which is a 1800-ton hydraulic press), and when the thing closes up, the top of the pistols have to fit inside a matching slot in the top.

Well, they put in bigger pistons because the original ones were too small. And the brackets the guy designed for the new pistons suffered from an English-to-metric malfunction.

There were talking an awful lot of steel off in the mill to make'em fit!

3. did customer service at a mail-order catalog company
many years ago...

lasted there a year... amazed that I lasted that long

aside from the irate customers, the company sucked, no support to prevent burnout. They didn't care about employee retention. 6 months after I started I had seniority. the department has anywhere between 15-20 people answering phones at any given time.

I had put in for other jobs in other departments, but somehow the jobs were either a posting error, they hired someone else or some other excuse - despite my being told I was a good fit for the job.

Found out after I left there, that my supervisor was squashing my "bids" because I was sooooo good on the phones she didn't want to lose me.

about a month before I quit - they went through and did "employee evaluations".. no surprise the evaluations were tailored to justify paycuts for everyone. I worked Wednesdays through Sundays, with Mon-Tue off. Apparantly the paycut announcement was made on one of my days off - when I went to work on Wednesday there were many empty seats, most of those finding that their pay was to be cut had just up and left. I never got a paycut, and I can only assume that enough people left (and weren't replaced) to stem further cutbacks.

On my last weekend shift, I had to go into the back store room to find a form. While searching through boxes, I came across the personel files. naturally, I looked at mine. And yes, I was also slated for a pay cut.

I ran into that same supervisor a year or so later. She actually had the nerve to ask me if I was interested in coming back to work there. I told her it would have to at a significantly higher pay. "How much?" she asked

I told her "A million dollars an hour and I quit after the first day"

Plus the mother fuckers can't even find me a cube to move into (from the open but roomy desk I have) so they want me to share a fucking office the size of a broomclosest with someone. So lets see, less room, less privacy than I have now, and they have the fucking NERVE to tell me "enjoy your upgrade". Well FUCK YOU. I'm not leaving my old station.

13. I actually like my job ...
its the people in my department that piss me off. I am good at what I do.I don't want to give off but so much info because you never know who is reading this. But sometimes I just want to tell people how stupid the shit they say sometimes really sounds. But I just put my mp3 player volume on high and I zone out.

Its gotten to the point where I don't like working with anybody at all. I should'nt be forced to work in a group because the one important point is that my name is the only name on my paycheck. I did'nt come into this department to make friends and that's the problem. I could go on and on but I don't myself not to concentrate on the negative.

I am praying for a transfer up this year, this spring ASAP.
