Yeah, that sounds good, but if you’re desperate for a job,

well, beggars can’t be choosers.

“A common misconception of a desperate job seeker is they can fit in at any company. Rushing through the job search without doing your research just for the sake of landing a gig is counterproductive. If you made it through the interview process and were offered a position, the first day or week would be a surprise. “

I'm not looking for a job now, thank God/Goddess. But while this advice is well-intentioned, it isn't really practical if someone is desperate.

1. And during a recession/depression, the employers get very picky
I tried to get a retail job during the Reagan recession of 1981-82, and it was the same story everywhere. If I went to a music store, it was "We have people with degrees in music applying for this minimum wage job" If I went to a clothing store, it was, "We have people with degrees in fashion merchandising applying this minimum wage job." If I went to a bookstore, it was, "We have people with degrees in library science applying for this minimum wage job."

A department store chain let me work over Christmas, and otherwise, I subsisted (barely)by registering at four temp agencies and calling each one of them starting at 7AM.

2. I was unemployed then too. Doing some temp office work, but there wasn't
much of that available.

It wasn't until spring of '83 that I landed a permanent job. That was a hellacious recession.

3. I had to interview three damn times for a cashier/stocker job at a CVS
in 2003. It was ridiculous.
