Songs that pretty much ended the singer's career?
This differs from a one-hit wonder in that there's no evidence that the one-hit wonder had anything else to offer. I'm talking about performers who had a great album but whose careers were snuffed due to a poor choice of first-released-single.

As an example, I'd offer Joan Osborne. I'm not a fan, and those who do like her will argue that she has a robust and successful career, but let's be honest. Other than "What if God Was One of Us," has she released a song that's had any airplay in the mainstream market? That was likely the worst song on the album, but that's the one they chose to release. Why?

Other examples?

5. I think that was a case of mercy-euthanasia
For the good of humanity in general, they self-destructed after the release of that turd.

They still tour, I believe, but without Ms. Slick at the helm. What's the point?

51. Possibly the worst rock concert I ever went to - the ticket was a "gift" from a friend,
was Jefferson Starship.

I remember it because there was nothing more depressing than Grace Slick singing "White Rabbit" for the nine billionth time in her life - clearly even she was bored by it. The other thing I remember was that it was the day of Alexander Solzhenitsyn's commencement address at Harvard where he decried Western materialism.

27. Actually, they managed a few big hits after that one
"Sara" and "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" both made #1. Which means that "Starship" actually had three #1 hits while neither Jefferson Airplane nor Jefferson Starship ever topped the singles chart. Pretty weird.

I'd say Meredith Brooks, who had a huge hit with this:

But she wasn't really all that...so I guess she just falls in the one hit wonder category.

Worst song on the album (totally non-representative of their sound or talent), yet it got mondo air play. Same thing almost happened to Radiohead.

34. PERFECT example, kwassa....
...That was the one that did it. Yep. Exactly. From the Faces and Jeff Beck Group and his early, potent solo stuff to that song? Forget about it. That was the stone-cold dead end of Rod in terms of his rock cred. And it didn't have to be that way! He was still relatively young and vital at that point. Unlike Starship's "We Built This City," which was just the pathetic final note to a band that had ceased to be relevant years before that.

20. "Big Bang Baby" - STP and "Radio GaGa" - Queen ...
In the case of Stone Temple Pilots, this song knocked them right out. They still released some great stuff on that release and after, but this killed them.

For Queen, they lost American airplay, but they were still big everywhere else. Considering they were always 'contemporary' with their style, it was stupid for US stations to stop playing them. They released great stuff up to the end.

I like both songs personally.

46. This may be too soon, but I think "Wind It Up" killed Gwen Stefani's chances of superstardom
Yes I know she's still selling albums, but the success of her first album had caused her to receive rather significant media attention. A second successful album launch could have launched her into true Madonna-in-the-1980's style superstardom. Then the audio trainwreck known as "Wind It Up" was released as the debut track from her second album. I can't help but think that had she just debuted with "The Sweet Escape" things might have turned out differently.

That album was OK, but Vibeology was her second album. At least it was good enough for the record company to finance a third album from Paula...which was just AWFUL!!!

And when I said it should have been her last foray into music, that was a dig at her current stint on American Idol. Talk about awful! :puke:

Tides are turning bringing winds of change
Why do I feel this way
The promise of a new day

As through time the earth moves under my feet
One step closer to make love complete
What has the final say
The promise of a new day

Again, that's totally from memory. I'm going to hang my head in shame now...
