I don't understand the Ignore or the Hide functions here at DU.

It seems to me that if you want to ignore someone, you just ignore them and you don't click on their posts. Same with Hide. Why should I hide anything? I sail right past it with no damage to my psyche if I am not interested.

Can anyone explain why I SHOULD use either function? Maybe there is something that I missed...

I ignore folks the old fashioned way if I choose to. However I do believe some folks get into pretty bad pissing matches so the ignore is a good way to stifle any future confrontation.

2. The people I have on ignore are just so inane I can't bear it.

Just seeing their user names makes me want to hurl. So, it's much more pleasant for me this way.

if you're like me, you get into heated "conversations" over things like whether or not smokers are demon spawn. That's when ignore is useful so you don't get your buttons pushed b/c you can't see what someone else says.

I've only used hide threads a few times when the volume is so overwhelming that I can't get through a page. sometimes it makes it faster to read a forum.
