Best (non-Live, Non-Greatest Hits) Double Album ever issued?
Ok, the main criteria is it must be considered a 'Double Album' (2 Vinyl/2 CD) and it must be of previously unreleased by that artist. It cannot be a live album nor can it be a greatest hits.

My vote there is only one:

They phoned that one in. And frankly, it would have been better cut down to a single record.

30. I'd rank "White Album" as #1 and "Graffiti" as #2, BUT...
...John Lee Hooker's collaboration with Canned Heat, "Hooker & Heat," is an all-time favorite. Starts with John Lee solo and the band is slowly added, resulting in the paint-peeling 11-minute "Boogie Chillen No. 2."

My signature line photo probably gives a clue as to how I feel about JLH...a "blues man" who was a "rock star" in the same way that Johnny Cash was a "country artist" who was a "rock star." The best of the best.

As a guy who came to it after its release due to age, it was like diving into the long, complex masterwork of your favorite novelist. To my mind, it didn't have the "hits", but man do I remember the delightful sense of mystery I got exploring this record.

Plus, loved your little google caution. Hilarious.

...that several of those tracks date back as far as '70, also '71, '72, '73. So not a true "artistic statement of where the band is right now" double LP. For that I'd have to go with Quadrophenia, Daydream Nation or Blonde On Blonde.

As long as they were not previously released. So yeah, Night Flight was an older song they threw in there for filler (I think all of side #4 is that) they were never on any other Led ZEppelin album before that.

And I happen to love Night Flight

50. Sandanista! deserves a place in the discussion

Back when it came out--as triple vinyl--this was one everyone was talking about, a real force to be reckoned with. Obviously some weak spots, but there's nearly 40 songs on it I think. It truly got everyone's attention in 1980, as I recall.

84. Can't believe it got this far down before someone said London Calling
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 06:16 PM by abq e streeter
To me, nothing else comes close, although The River, the "White Album" , and Electric Ladyland ( oops, almost forgot about Layla) are strong honorable mentions...I thought Sandinista had enough strong material to have been a major league killer single album, or a strong ( but still no London Calling) double, but a lot of stylistic experiments in Sandinista, some of which worked better than others. Not to begrudge Strummer et al from experimenting to their hearts content; they'd sure as hell earned that by then, and I'd still rather hear The Clash experimenting than almost anyone else's polished final product...

87. I still like Sandanista how it is
Sure, they could have made it another "combat rock" (though it came first.... so 'combat rock' would have been another 'sandanista') and been more popular, but they stuck to their guns and put loads of weird shit on there. I also really like The Cure, and they do similar things. Most of their records since "kiss me..." have been doubles (and lots of b-side stuff from singles too), and they've probably suffered for it financially, but what the hell.... after having #1 singles and playing to stadiums they seem to have gone down in popularity, but playing to 10k people and selling a few hundred thousand records is nothing to thumb one's nose at.

and Strummer is my #1 rock and roll hero, in some ways even more than my boy Bruce...as I said, The Clash experimenting and sometimes arguably missing the mark is still fascinating and worth listening to..." In these days, the beat is militant, must be a clash, there's no alternative".

66. Frank Zappa - Joe's Garge; however...
I'm not sure if this totally counts as a non-live album, as some of the tracks feature guitar solos recorded live at concerts laid over top of studio backing tracks. Incidentally, the guitar solos were not from performances of the songs they were placed into. Zappa called this "xenocrony."

83. Interesting. I didn't know that about Joe's Garage.
I'd also list Uncle Meat, especially the 37 minute King Kong epic.

86. When Handel completed the Messiah...
his apprentice came to check on him, and he was in his room, crying, saying that he had seen the face of God.

Isn't that just beautiful?
