My mommie died today.
Does it sound funny for a 60yo man to say mommie? Although I called her mother all my adult life, tonight she is my mommie again.

Don't be sad for my mother and me. She had 94yrs and 11 months on earth. She always said she had a great life. Yes, she had her sorrow. She had childhood polio, she lost a 4 day old baby, she saw all her siblings pass away except for her youngest sister. She lost her one and only husband at age 54 and lived as a widow for almost 41 years. But she enjoyed life and people. And boy did people love her.

She began to slip a little at age 89. I went to Indiana and took care of her for 3 and 1/2 years until we had to put her in the nursing home. I would do it all again.

My sister saw her this morning (My sister went to the nursing home almost every day. I'm back in Florida but made a trip up north every 3 to 4 months. I will leave for Indiana in the morning.) My sister said my mother looked tired, but my mother, as always, said she was fine. My sister took her to the dining room before she left. After lunch the nursing home employees put her on the bed for her afternoon nap. She died while she was asleep.

I thank God for a great mother, for keeping her out of serious pain during her old age. Also for taking her before the Alzheimers took her mind away. (She still knew us kids and could carry on a conversation.)

And to you Mother, thank you for being a wonderful mother and a great person.

I love you mommie!

11. My dear lumberingbear...
Ah, I'm so sorry to hear this news...

Right now your grief is fresh and sharp...

But it will lessen as time goes by, and then your sweet memories of her will reclaim you...

That which is remembered, lives...

She will always be there, inside you, whenever you need her...

All you have to do is...look.

Safe passage to her...

Hugs for you...

37. What a beautiful son you are. What a beautiful mother your mother must have been.
If you feel like giving some advice to others who might be losing parents now, that would be fantastically helpful.

You seem very strong and probably a good role model for going through this struggle/process.

It doesn't matter how old we get, we need our Mommy somehow and she stays with us. She sounds like a really strong woman, one to be admired. I want to cry with you but she doesn't seem like the type who'd want tears. You're a lucky man but I know you're grieving. You'll remember the good and the funny soon enough. For now just let yourself cry. Thinking of you. :(

P.S. Don't tell anyone but I'm pushing 40 and still call my mom "Mommy" occasionally. Okay, lots.

85. Your mother sounds like a wonderful person.
 The way you describe her reminds me a lot of my great-grandmother, who died several years ago after a long, full life with many challenges, sorrows, and joys. Sending thoughts and good vibes your way, lumberingbear. :pals: :grouphug:
