My Great Aunt and last surviving sibling of Joe Louis, Vunies Barrow High, passed away

She was 92 years old. She graduated cum laude from Howard at the age of 23 and spent 25 years as a teacher and counselor in the Detroit Public School system.

Unfortunately, she suffered from Alzheimer's and walked out of the assisted living facility where she stayed and passed away from exposure to the freezing Michigan temperature.

She'll be buried this Saturday.

As far as legal action is concerned, I'm reserving any further information at this time.

Rest In Peace, Aunt Vunies.

10. My sincere sympathy, Mr Scorpio,
to you and her family. IMO Alzheimer patients should have bracelets
that alert when leaving their houses, and can allow tracking if they do.
Have visited a lot of facilities with my therapy dogs, and almost all have
the doors to the Alzheimer units locked. Listened to the Joe Louis matches
on the radio with my grandfather when i was a kid. He was a great athlete.
Take care...z

19. My condolences, MS.
Very pretty lady she was. I'm so sorry she died the way she did. Very sad. I work in a facility like that and I'm always afraid that's going to happen one day. It really is very hard to keep tabs on the dementia patients every minute of the day and still allow them some quality of life. Fine line, indeed.

I lost a great aunt this morning, too, to liver cancer. She was a real hoot and lots of fun. I will always remember her with a great deal of love.

36. I'm so sorry. I read about this...
...on-line and in the papers. Joe Louis has always been a hero of mine. As others have said, your Aunt Vunies is also a hero, though an unsung one, for devoting her life to teaching.

I don't know the details other than what's been written in the press, but I can't understand how this could have happened. It's very sad.

37. I am so sorry to hear of your loss...
for most of my Nursing life I have picked up extra hours by working in Nursing Homes. Alzheimer patients were always my fav. patients. Nursing homes are frequently not up to snuff.

Alz. pts are known to wonder and are ganerally in a contained unit for their safety. You are right to think what you think. PM me if you need some help or direction.

Back when I was doing theatre at the old Bonfils Theatre in Denver, the security guy/doorman used to be the body guard for your great uncle. I forget his name. This was back in the mid-1980s.
