1. Good stuff!
Edited on Wed Feb-20-08 11:36 PM by swag
But that's a lot of clicking for an old man. I got to Public Enemy and thought, "that's enough clicking, and that's good enough for me."

If the Germs rank above that, somebody please let me know, 'kay?

Thx 1138!

Remarkably, Prince is #1 and the Grateful Dead are #8. Pretty much bullshit for a list I think...

13. According to wiki
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_Tap
Spınal Tap is a mostly fictitious heavy metal band, the subject of the 1984 rockumentary/mockumentary film This Is Spınal Tap. The film was accompanied by a soundtrack album of the same name. In the years since the film was made the actors who portrayed the band members have played concerts and released music under the Spın̈al Tap name, blurring the line between parody and reality.

20. Feh-- "Wiki" WTF exactly does "mostly fictitious" even mean????
Heavy Metal music blurs the line between noise and music; between pretense and artistry; between the sublime and the ridiculous. Spinal Tap is like a bullshit detector, guiding one through the sea of retarded sexuality in the heavy metal world.

heavy metal heads: deal.

Seriously, one of the most ignorant statements I've ever read on the internets!

FUCK YEAH, they're REAL! They are as real as YOU are, but not quite as confused as you are (which, BTW, is quite an accomplishment! Congratulations are in order!)

You should check out their music, because it is the finest metal music there is. By ANY metric.

Enlightenment has fallen on you today-- be thankful. :hi:

51. Agreed. No Zeppelin? That's absurd...
...Thanks, LynneSin. Their fourth album's title, comprised of those symbols, was utterly groundbreaking in '71. Is any symbol in rock more potent than "ZOSO"? Answer: No. And Zep's iconic Icarus-falling image for Swan Song Records, based on the Rimmer painting, has to be as identifiable as anything.

Korn. Right. Give me a break.

54. Yes, they certainly get points for that...
.."R" being backwards and all. Inspired. Truly unique. I grew up in Pittsburgh, where outside of town, near the Monroeville Mall (site of George Romero's classic film "Dawn of the Dead"), there was a large toy store called "Children's Palace." For the first year or so of its existence, "Children's Palace" spelled its name with the "R" in "Children" printed backwards. Until people complained that this suggested that children were, or should be, illiterate. Those folks turned that "R" right around. It works for "Korn," though, and still does. They're one of the greatest bands ever. And no one would ever accuse them of being literate.

28. When I saw this title, I immediately thought of five bands. Three were on the list...
Misfits at No. 9, Grateful Dead at No. 8 and Rolling Stones at No. 2.

Although, with the Dead, they could also have spots on the list for the dancing bears and the skeleton with roses.

The two band symbols that I thought of that didn't make the list:

Iron Maiden's Eddie, seen here in bobblehead form:

I submit to you that any band symbol that has its own bobblehead needs to be on this list.

And Ween's boognish:

I know two people with this tattooed on them. Now that's dedication to a band symbol.

55. I agree with having Maiden on the list, but for a different reason
and that's because of the font Steve Harris designed for the band name. I don't think any other band font has been as widely used as Iron Maiden's. The actual name of the font is "Metal Lord" - here it is:

"Metal Lord can be commonly identified as the typestyle used within the Iron Maiden wording itself on all albums and singles produced by the band. It has become their hallmark, along with Eddie, and is commonly used in other situations. Grand Theft Auto 3 Vice City used this style of lettering for the numerous "V-Rock" signs that can be found around the cities, and also for the lettering on some posters they made for a ficticious band "Love Fist". The style is synonymous with metal music, and is widely recognizable.

The .ttf truetype font of this lettering, often found as metalord.ttf metallord.ttf and labelled "Metal Lord Heavy" was created by Ray Larabie , of Larabie Fonts in 1996. It is distributed under a free use licence, and can be downloaded from his site,Larabie Fonts, or alternatively here at Maiden World in the Iron Maiden Downloads section. "

http://www.maiden-world.com/articles/iron-maiden-fonts-typography.html

But I guess the Scissor Sisters is more culturally relevant.

:wtf:

31. Grateful Dead LOGOS ares the only ones
to have a supreme court ruling. Sometime in the nineties cops were pulling people on the road to shows over just because they had a stealie on their car. This was considered probable cause and the Supremes backed them up.

So Deadheads created a series of stickers that were, to other Deadheads, just as recognizable to themeselves but not the police. The Dancing Bear, creditied to LSD Guru and Grateful dead friend Owsley, became the stealthy sticker.

http://www.purplemoon.com/Stickers/bears.html

How the Skull and lightning were created:http://www.thebear.org/GDLogo.html

Some variation of this logo hung from the ceiling at Winterland along with the Stones "LickIt".

A line drawing of this was also on the first bumper stickers on the scene "There is Nothing Like a Grateful Dead Concert" that were sold by Sunshine in th late sixties early seventies.
