In the "rockumentary" This Is Spïnal Tap, there was a scene where guitarist Nigel Tufnel was showing filmmaker Martin De Bergi his equipment. After they got done looking at all the guitars, including one that "can't be played, ever...don't even look at it...you've seen enough of that one," they went to Nigel's amp head...where all the controls were calibrated from 0 to 11.

"If we need that extra...push...over the top, you know what we do?"
'Put it up to eleven?'
"That's right. One louder."
'Well, why not just make ten louder?'
