A salute to the Magistrate!
I haven't seen him around GDP for awhile, and I hope everything's well with him.

I hope he gets to see this - he's one of my favorite moderators, and one of my favorite posters when he's not in uniform. He's funny as hell, and he always has the perfect quote available for any situation.

Do you think he keeps a file of quotations to use, or are they all in his head? Either way, he's certainly familiar with thousands of quotationss, and knows how to find the right one.

He's also got a cynical astuteness, especially regarding politics and history, that I just adore.

A toast to the Magistrate!

It is an unintended consequence of exposure to quantities of Mr. Shaw, and 'The Federalist Papers', at an early age, and makes me cringe in consequence to read Orwell on the usage of English: parents, be warned....

4. The Magistrate is one of the most honorable, decent people I've ever encountered on DU.
3 times I had the distinct pleasure and honor to work with him as a moderator. He is always unfailingly polite and courteous. One of the smartest people on DU. A true credit to Democratic Underground. I can't say enough good things and I can't compliment The Magistrate enough.

I raise my glass to toast a true class act.

To The Magistrate!

Was it this one?

Here are a couple of pictures of a later project, a U.S. Marine FB-1 fighter of VMF-10 in China in 1928 with Gen. Smedley Butler. This one earned me high regard from the Marine contingent on the modeling site where I presented it; apparently, this unit, under the name 'Red Devils', is very distinguished, and they were pleased to see someone model some of its very earliest equipment.

That one won me prize money. This shot is angled to show the true madness of the rigging.

I have a P-26 stalled well short of completion; the plastic was too dark to take the yellow properly. A squadron's worth of these were bought by U.S. Chinese and donated to the Nanking government just before the Japanese attacked in 1937, and did pretty well for a while.

57. Thank You Very Much, Mr. Monkeyfunk, For Putting This Up
Your friendship and your kindness are much appreciated here. She who must be obeyed told me of it, and told me my course for the evening in consequence. It is a great pleasure to be held in esteem by so many excellent persons.

Circumstances have arisen that I think require me to devote a good deal more of my attentions and energies to my immediate family. My daughter is off at college now, under a full expenses scholarship at the U. of C.: she did much of the wrangling of my grandsons, and I am the only one available really to step into the gap. They are a handful, being excellent boys of six and seven, and do now meet my basic standard for getting along with children, namely being able to hold up their end of a conversation.

The quotations, Lord save me, are mostly in my head, though on occassion I will look one up to be sure I have it right. But I am also quite capable of forgeting to turn off the stove, and can never remember where I left my shoes, so things balance out. They are just things that stick in my mind from various sources....

"People are fucking people, and that is fucked up."

"Misanthropy is how the devil falls in love."

"When a stupid man is about to do something he knows is wrong, he says it is his duty."

"There is no one so lonely as a dissenter at a Non-Conformists' convention."

"They say war is an art, but it's not. It mostly consists in outwitting people, stealing from widows and orphans, and inflicting suffering on the helpless for one's own ends, and that's not art: that's business."

"A nation is a group of people united by a mistaken view of history, and hatred of their neighbors."

"The laboring people are neccessarily the largest portion of the population, and it is nonesense to insist that what benefits the greatest portion is injurious to the whole."

"Saints should be judged guilty till proved innocent."

"Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable we are forced to change it every few months."

"It is wrong to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious."

"Sincerity is the great thing: if you can fake that, you've got it made."

"The Law in its majestic equality forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."

"If a man will continue to insist that two and two do not make four, I know of nothing in the power of argument that can stop up his mouth."

"All men of reason are men of violence in their hearts."

"In matters of religion, truth is the opinion that has survived."

"Where it is a duty to worship the Sun, it is pretty sure to be a crime to investigate the laws of heat."

"The popular superstitions of the Empire were regarded by the people as all equally true, by the philosopher as all equally false, and by the official as all equally useful."

"Reality is that which, when one cease to believe in it, remains."

"It is dangerous to deserve the gratitude of the King."

79. It Is The Latter Case, My Friend, That Most Requires My Attentions
They need a pack leader, and also someone to unite against....

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

"An idealist is one who, on noticing a rose smells better than a cabbage, concludes it will make a better soup."

"Those who descend from ivory towers generally go straight into the gutter."

"Children make the best opponents at Scrabble, as they are both easy to beat and fun to cheat."

"Vegetables are all very well, but lack purpose when unaccompanied by a chunk of meat."

Asked whether evil should be repaid with good, the Master answered: "With what, then, do I repay good? Repay good with good; repay evil with correction."

"They were going to say we interfered with freedom of expression. That is a lie, and we could not allow them to print it."

"So grave was the crisis, it was neccessary to carry out the sentence first, and hold the trial afterwards."

"Never write what you can phone; never phone what you can say; never say what you can nod; never nod what you can wink; never wink what you can smile."

"Except for a circus, nothing packs up and clears out of town faster than the Christmas spirit."

"I may not understand what you say, but I'll defend to your death my right to deny it."

75. Once again, I am in DEBT to you, sir...I've heard that rendition, but never before have I SEEN it.
That's a wonderfully skillful use of the B&W format, IMHO.

And a powerful flashback to a different time; a better, simpler time...
those halcyon "days of yore" when music came from tiny grooves in a plastic disk
and "TWANG" roamed the earth freely, without let or hindrance...

*sigh*

I have seen more cigarettes smoked by guitars then I care to recall at this late date. Love music; loathe musicians....

Here is another favorite from the period, featuring the true star you mentioned:

65. I may be a few minutes late to the party but I would like to add my 2 cents...
The Magistrate is IMHO a slightly cynical, unfailingly polite, astute and very witty commentator. I've seen him take on some hard cases and reduce them to putty. He has a gift with both thoughts and people.

My most sincere regards....

83. Does Not Proverbs Say, Sir, 'The Guilty Flyeth When None Doth Pursue'?
There is a story told from prohibition days, when newspaper men could crowd round gangsters in a hotel lobby seeking hard-boiled quotes, of one torpedo being pestered with questions about why someone had been found in grotesquely damaged extremis in the trunk of a car in Cicero: the man finally answered, "He musta done sump'in. They doan do ya like that 'less ya done sump'in."

I've known him in both my incarnations, and I've never seen him be anything but polite and measured in his responses, even when people were foaming at the mouth all around him. That kind of track record for that long on a message board this contentious is really quite something! :toast:
