The End of an Era: I'm posting this from the last Netscape browser ever.
Version 9.0.0.6, which is actually little more than Firefox 2.0.0.12 with a Netscape-y theme. I downloaded and installed it just for old times' sake. It is being discontinued March 1st.

Farewell, and thank you for the good times.

9. Kinda sad = I remember installing it in (I think) 1993
and being very impressed with it. Farewell, old friend. I now use Firefox, and like it very much.

Dropped market share hard when IE became the default browser for Microsoft operating systems. During that time, Netscape started up a group called Mozilla, and designated their browser source code as 'open source,' allowing users and programmers to continuously buid upon it, eventually becoming the Mozilla Firefox that we all know and love today. There are also other browsers, such as Flock, that are using that same architecture.

Ever since AOL, which ruins virtually every pioneering software they can get their hands on, bought Netscape, they pretty much pissed their investment away. Nowadays, Netscape is basically a web portal that few people use, and a low-priced dial-up ISP. The web browser had become an afterthought, and in recent years, was little more than a rebadged Mozilla product. In recent years, market share dropped below 10%. Last month, AOL decided to pull the plug and send everyone to Firefox.

If you're still feel loyal to Netscape, best bet would be to download Firefox, if you haven't already. It's pretty much the successor to them.

I too fondly remember the old Netscape. I first started with their predecessor, the ancient Mosaic, then moved on to Navigator. Lost track of them years ago, particularly when I started using Firefox. I was actually surprised they were still around.

19. I do use Firefox and I like it.
I just had no idea about what happened to Netscape. It figures that AOL and Microsoft each had a part in events leading to its demise. Thanks for the info.

17. I still maintain a 1993-era 95mhz PowerMac; and its Netscape shall never be updated.
It's actually pretty amazing how well it still functions.

Sure, I can click on a page of porno thumbnail-links,
then wander into the kitchen, make a pot of coffee,
and be back before the page finishes loading...

But it WILL finish loading, and display the page.
Not many 15-year-old programs can say that; not many
can say ANYTHING at ANY speed at all, y'know whatImean?
