Are you honestly going to upgrade to yet another movie format (Blue Ray)?
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 04:40 PM by Mike03
I can only tell you this: It has taken me fifteen years to trade in all my cassette tapes for CDs (and I don't have an IPod or download music online). I am STILL not entirely finished upgrading my VHS collection to DVDs or "remastered" or "Director's Cut" DVDs, which are still going on the market even as I write this.

Maybe I'm just getting old or too frugal, but there is no way in the world that I am ever going to go through the process of trading up for yet another format.

I will probably just horde DVD players, so that as they break I'll have another handy.

Screw Blue Ray, especiall in this economy. My propane bills this winter are averaging $500 a month.

: If I were younger, say, still in college or didn't have a very large collection of DVDs I might consider upgrading; however, that is not my situation.

And does anyone remember MiniDisc? I invested heavily in that technology, and it went nowhere. It seemed brilliant at the time!

1. Not Anytime Soon
I don't even buy DVDs anymore because of the crap the industry keeps pulling. If / when my current player breaks down, I doubt I'll run right out for a replacement - I use it maybe 4 times per year, now.

They can get their money out of younger generations, but I think most of us older Gen-Xers and Boomers have seen enough "planned obsolescence" to not want to gt involved.

2. Not right away. But won't Blu-Ray players play plain old DVDs as well??

6. Cool. I'll get a Blu Ray player but don't intend to replace my existing DVDs.
:-)

10. That's good news
I didn't know that.

Hopefully it will stay that way, because that is a system I could live with.

4. My husband loves electronics and new gadgets. My aunt bought him the Blu-ray for
Christmas. We have really enjoyed it. But if it weren't for him, I'd still have the regular ole dvd player.

7. Except Blu-Ray players also play DVDs.
Actually, your regular old DVDs will look far better on a Blu-Ray player if you've got an HDTV.

It's just technological progress, it won't give you cancer. :P

8. It's not high on my list.
But I don't have a big movie collection, either.

11. I don't see much value in hi-def except for reading the credits at the end of a movie
or if you plan on using your TV as a computer monitor. I don't need to see every pore in the actor's face to enjoy a movie.

12. I don't feel a need to do anything of the sort at the moment.
And I don't have a very big DVD collection.

14. Not me.
Just not that important. Let me know when the prices bottom out. Then I'll think about it.

15. I will not do it dishonestly.
But seriously, I've been in no hurry to upgrade to an HD television. Perhaps I will someday, and at that time I'm sure I'll start buying movies in whatever HD format prevails.

16. My VHS collection suits me fine.
This is how it works: Most movies made have appeared on VHS. A fraction - yes, fraction! - of those made it to DVD. And a further fraction of DVD movies will make it to Blu-Ray. And so on, until all you can get are Hollywood movies. No thanks.

17. eh
just last night I was toying with giving my entire DVD collection to the local FD. Over 100 movies. I haven't watched any of them in a year. They just sit there collecting dust while I download new movies to disk.

So. No. Chances of me upgrading are very slim.

18. I don't get the angst about blu-ray
The players still play, and even upconvert, regular DVDs into near hi-def quality, so there's no need to ditch your DVD collection.

I don't even buy DVDs, though, so the switch won't affect me.
