So I'm waiting for the time to start my class and a student yells "Hey Honkie!" |
|
and she did this to get my attention.
I'm not even gonna ask for advice. I just want someone to shoot me.
Please.

1. Someone said "Honkie?" Someone from 1970... |
|
...must have walking into some kind of rift in space-time and traveled to the future.

How did you respond?
I've been called a fuckin' bitch a couple of times, but that's usually at the end of the semester when it's obvious how the grades will go.
But I've never had someone use a derogatory term to get my attention. Not sure how I'd have responded to that...probably by taking the student into the hallway and giving them a scalding lecture on the appropriate way to address me in class.

7. I had trouble finding my lower plate |
|
then I realized I didn't have one.
Generally, I've never had any reason to take an enrollee in a college class into the hallway.

12. I have had to, one time before. |

A student who interrupted, interrupted, interrupted. Not with questions, but making snide comments, sarcastic remarks, and basically talking to himself. Also made fun of other students who asked questions.
I had talked to him after one class--asked him to remember that other students were in the class. Subtlety didn't work...
I asked him to meet me outside the room...told him to either shut up or leave. He came back in, got his bookbag, and left. The students were glad to see him go...it was impossible to lecture with him in the room.

16. a friend of mine who's a professor tells me amazing stories |
|
about distracted and rude students, students who can't read or write well, etc. Almost as if these people think they are still in high school.
So different from when I was in undergrad, we were just glad to be there at all and be treated like adults...
I seem to remember the never present football players in one class, though, it was always a shock when one actually came to class.
(I went to a football obsessed Univ.)

But there is something of a blooming in disrespect. It's almost as if they've decided the school needs their tuition more than the kids need real educations. It's scary only if they get their way.
Half this class thinks they're going to be nurses, most of the remainder think they are going to be occupational therapists. They all think they'll have jobs starting over $60K.

I was lucky to get a temp job with my degree back then...
I'm in a book group with a bunch of retired profs and they tell me students would come into their offices whining about not getting an A when they didn't do the work or did poorly on the tests...
I think the hardest thing for teachers of all stripes is the lack of respect. Not being taught respect for adults or anyone at all seems like a serious problem in the making for kids who will have to work and learn as well as for the society at large....
But then again, I went to Catholic School in the 60s and I think we were afraid to act up....

I live in the south and I first heard that word when I was in the 7th grade in 1972. I didn't know the word, "fuck" but I imagine that is :wtf: I would have said. Cracker was not a word that I was ever called. I would have thought they meant Saltines. That seems like such a loooooooong time ago.

The only time I hear that word is when I'm watching a low-budget 70s film.
