Niagara Falls in Winter (Graphic intensive)--EDIT: 3 NEW PICS
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 11:21 PM by Godhumor
My wife and I have the great fortune of living less than twenty minutes away from Niagara Falls, and we enjoy walking around the Niagara State Park on a relatively frequent basis. At any rate, last weekend we went after a pretty brutal old snap and got to see some incredible sights. 11 pictures follow:

Two new pics so you can see how quickly the ice builds up on things:

One pic of me holding up a chunk of ice/snow:

3. It was a great day to go
The wind blew the mist back over the park and the freezing temperature froze the mist to the trees and snow. You could walk across the snow, jump up and down on it, fall on it, etc. and have no chance in hell of breaking through the surface ice. We ended up taking over 80 pics, but I felt it would be unwise to subject anyone trying to load this thread to that amount.

5. I need to get some high quality pics of when they light up the falls and rapids at night
Been hoping for a non-windy winter night to head down there, but we haven't had many of those recently.

6. You can see the house I grew up in in the top picture
It's just inside the left frame.

I still think of it as the Seagram's tower.

7. Magnificent!
Number three is jaw dropping. I don't live near such a wondrous, natural setting and when I see something so unusual, it stuns me.

I liked number nine too. I looks so frigid and almost impossible to explore, although it makes me want to try!

Number twelve has such an incredible tone to it. The white has the slightest lavender hue, it seems it only to be possible to conjure up, with oils on a palette.

I'm always amazed when someone can capture, a perfect essence of atmosphere.

Thanks for sharing!

10. It amazes me how much color can be expressed in just white
I love some of the snow pics my wife and I took there--so still, monochromatic, and static yet filled with such energy.

It's a wonderful place to go spend an afternoon.

11. My wife doesn't want her picture posted...
We have a great shot of her standing next to one of those pay binocular-type viewer thingies that is completely covered in the purest white ice. It's one of the coldest (temperature-wise) pictures I have ever seen.

14. It was impressive to see
I remember the Ice Storm of 91 in Rochester where that kind of thing turned to destruction--here it just looked so calm.

16. My dear Godhumor!
Wow, these are stunning!

I would never have expected to see ice in that rapid water!

Really lovely pics...

Lucky you to be close enough to see the falls on a regular basis...

I've been through there recently, and found it to be extraordinarily gorgeous!

Thank you for posting!

:hi:

19. Look at you!!! You look robust and happy!
Nice pix, but as someone who's allergic to winter (no geography grief, I was born in Baltimore) I'm glad it was you and not me who was there to take them.

Now, explain all those people behind you. They look like they're amassing Weapons of Snow Destruction--did you have a battle after that camera was safely put away???
