This year's flu...
Those who've had it this year, what was your first symptom?

I've got a sore throat and am running a little fever...If this is an early symptom, I want to get to the quick care clinic tomorrow AM.

throat hurts too. Wouldn't that be something if we got it at the same time? Not that I want either of us to get it though. I heard the ones going around this year are even resistant to the flu shot. :tinfoilhat: :scared: :hide:

2. Stupid me...I never got the shot...
and I'm around a lot of people at work. Sick college students all the time.

I should have gotten the shot...I guess hearing that this one isn't working makes me feel a little better about not having gotten it.

I hope you don't end up with it.

11. Yeah, see my sad story below. Same here
I.e., college students asking me "What'd I miss?"

A high school near here had 30% of it's students out w/ this year's flu. And don't feel too bad about the flu shot. My doc said the shot was a bad match for this year's strain.

I don't always get the flu, but this time, from what I hear, it hasn't really worked. Here's hoping we both stay well. :toast:

3. Sore throat and a low-grade fever Maddy.
And I had it for a full week, it went away for two days, and is back now with a vengeance. Grandkid ran a 102+ fever for 7 days with it.

(just had to be a little ray of sunshine for ya.)

Just kidding.

I've got chills, low fever, and a very sore throat...I hope I can get some tamiflu tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about what you and your grandchild have been through.

if you get it early.

Hubby has been gulping Airborne, and he hasn't had a single simptom.

Be well, MM!

42. not only does airborne work...
...but it tastes good, too! I recommend the pink grapefruit flavor, dropped into a 3 oz. paper cup of very cold water. Nummy nummy!

No flu here, no colds even though others in the household have been sick.

39. Chills, low fever and "tired" feeling are the beginning.
Get thyself to the Care Clinic!

Also - Chicken Broth - sipping it warm (I add medicinal herbs) really helps your throat and helps you feel better.

:grouphug: for you and your grandchild!

10. Scratchy throat, *not* sore
Down low, but not in chest. Those were my first symptoms and the prevailing onset here around St. Louis. I hope you avoid it. I'm not trying to be overly dramatic when I tell you that I'm pretty sure that's the sickest I've ever been, at least as an adult. Even w/ prescribed medicines and such early on, my temp got over 102 for 3 days in a row and I ran some level of fever for 7 days.

Do take care of it. And I really hope you don't have the version we had here.

That sounds terrible! I hope that St. Louis version doesn't make it to Mississippi!

13. I've seen all variations and experienced 2 myself
First time around it was severe headache followed by deep congestion, and aches all over. And it took forever to recover. Second time really sore throat, sinus congestion, hacking cough. Fever both times was only a degree or so.

I had the same symptoms and got knocked on my keister for a week. However, I was lucky and the cough didn't last more than 10 days.

Oh crap! :7 Just as I typed that I coughed again. what a dumbass I am!

Pray for the quick and dirty version!

16. You could be getting the crude that is going around down here
don't know if its a flu, but it starts with symptoms like that and then it gets in your chest and bronchitis and then phenomena - tons of folks out with it around here - no energy and very bitchy - lingers forever

I've felt puny all week, I keep taking cold/sinus meds and massaging my feet with mentholatem and wearing socks (especially to bed) - I've kept it at bay and intend on getting plenty of rest this weekend.

Try the mentholatem & socks, it really helps. :)

hope you get to feeling better  :loveya:

17. Sounds like the way mine started...
The fever got worse, and I had chills. I started coughing...an unproductive cough from my chest. This was the worst part for me, because I couldn't sleep well.
Steam helped. So did having a nice warm kitty to sleep on my chest. When I finally coughed something up, it was nasty, hard mucous. This was at the end of January, and I still haven't completely gotten rid of the cough. :(

Take care of yourself, Maddy...:hug::hug:

I've had the flu like that twice in my life. Both times, I thought I would die...can't remember ever feeling as awful as I felt then.

I hope you can get over this, GoG. I think I'm ok...I don't feel any worse this morning than I felt last night...just I false alarm, I bet.

when you are lounging around the house and/or at bed time.

I promise you it will help you (remember, the nerve endings are all in your feet).

23. I think I had the flu but it was so minor so I am not sure
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 01:43 PM by Saint Etienne17
It may have just been some head cold.

I was congested, sensitive to light, and I had a bad cough. It came and went away after three days so it really was not bad at all.

I only think it may have been a flu because everyone has been getting sick here in SD the past month and a half, and I have a sick roommate.

25. Dunno if it is/was the flu or not, but
I've been sick this week, and it's the first time in years. Started with a light cough. Worked to a sore/scratchy throat and worse cough. Then sinuses (congestion, etc). Tuesday night I could barely get off the couch. Achy, no energy, chills, slight vertigo when standing. Spent Wednesday and most of Thursday in bed. Even when sick in the past, I've never been stuck in bed.

Started feeling better yesterday, back to just coughing today (knock wood).

Hope you're feeling better soon. There's a lot of this going around out there right now.

26. Just had it at beginning of February
Edited on Sat Feb-23-08 01:59 PM by Whoa_Nelly
Achy joints, tight painful chest like a bronchitis coming on

Next day, sudden high fever of 102, nothing would bring it down, but at least the ibuprofen and acetaminophen kept it in check.
Also dry, upper respiratory cough.
DayQuil and NyQuil were my new best friends, along with Gatorade.
Completely lost my appetite and lost about 9 lbs....helluva diet...:eyes:

Lasted about 6 days with 2-3 more days of low energy, shaky, and off and on low grade fever.

Sure hope you're not getting this, Maddy!

my son had it bad a few weeks ago. Headache, sore throat, high fever, bad cough, low energy, achy bones, low appetite...the works.

I hardly EVER get sick (knock on wood) but lord knows, I'm exposed to enough shit every season from the kids.

ShineGirl and MrShine have stayed relatively healthy, too.

Hope you're feeling better soon and that you get the SHORT VERSION.

38. generally with true flu you are feeling just fine one minute then the freight train hits
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 09:50 AM by yellowdogintexas
you and you have a fever of 103 or more and you really do feel like a train ran over you. The malaise and fatigue are unique to flu

colds and other virus infections sneak up on you in little stages
flu runs you down

edited to add there are some really nasty "flu-like syndromes" another term for not really flu but worse than a head cold going around up here... it is the secondary infections that are killing people; the sinusitis, bronchitis, etc.

40. I started with classic cold symptoms with a low grade fever and
just feeling lousy in general. It developed into a heavy cough, feeling even worse and missing two days work. General fatigue lasted for a couple of weeks. This has been making the rounds where I work, but the severity has varied from one person to the next.
