Why do rappers get away with homophobia so easily?
Seriously. If rock musicians said half the shit rappers do we'd all be up in arms.

1. It's rather hard for me to threaten to boycott a genre I don't even listen to in the first place.

7. Well....
I think I hear you.

I'll say that Eminem isn't exactly innocent in this shit, either.

3. They're the emotional equivalent of polar bears, aren't they?

Totally shallow, totally self absorbed, virtually obsessed with getting laid or engaging in other childish macho displays. How can you stand them?

4. A lot of sexism in that style of music, too
Well, at least there used to be. It's been a while since I've listened to hip hop.

15. it's funny , but
I figured out that "racism was wrong" when I figured out that most racists were mysogynists.

Ok not haha funny . . . but I don't think it's a coincidence.

Note: I finally "figured out" about racism in the early 80's. (Born and raised in the DEEP south.)

6. And sadly the intelligent rap gets no notice.
Paris, Michael Franti...no attention. But sing of bitches and hos and you're on your way to a platinum CD.

And some of my own music hasn't been much better. x(

8. Michael Franti is very cool...
I don't know about the "political" rappers of the past... some of their sexual politics weren't too great, either...

10. Franti represents the last little spark of hope I have left for humankind.
The rest of my music is pretty dark and hateful (he says as new Hate Eternal blasts out from his stereo). :)

9. They also glamorize gun violence which is pretty sick in my opinion.
So many people blame the NRA for gun violence but say NOTHING about the rappers. The rap fans tend to be young & impressionable. Is it a good thing to glorify violence? Is it a good thing to glorify criminal homicide?

16. Homosexual hatred is acceptable to much of our society.
Its prominent in the "comedy" (using that word loosely) of people like Larry the Cable Guy, its prominent in sports and movies. In movies like The Departed the cops call each other homophobic slurs.

Im sure Martin Scorsese would argue that's how Boston cops really talk, but that's the same defense rappers use. That they are using the language of the street.

This summer, Kanye West made a statement about eradicating homophobia from hip-hop. Al Sharpton has also made it a campaign of his.
