Help please - music rec's
Kind of a weird, dorky request, but I used to be a big music fan. For one reason or another, I've fallen out of it over the last few years (kids and life changes, I guess), and I'd love to get back into it.

I used to love bands like the pixies, sonic youth, the melvins, the stooges, nirvana, radiohead, pj harvey, and stuff like that ...

I know this is a dorky request, but it'd be cool to hear new music suggestions

2. Check out Pandora...
If you type in an artist, they'll find related music for you. It's pretty cool, actually.

3. If the previous two psts don't help, I have a couple of suggestions
I'm a child of the 70s and I like Tool, Evanescence, Audioslave and Wolfmother to name a few. Go to Amazon and check them out!

6. Amazon will recommend stuff to you.
It's based on what people buy from Amazon, but might prove useful.

7. Well, the band Boris named themselves after the Melvins song of the same name.
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 09:01 PM by Forkboy
Boris does everything from sludgy drone to short punk tunes and even a pretty tune like this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1z0FGxWi7Q

Big Business is so close to the Melvins they joined them (still do their own thing to though).
http://www.myspace.com/bigbigbusiness

And of course if you used to like the Melvins there's no reason to not still like them. Their last release, A Senile Animal, is awesome (has the guys from Big Business with them).

8. here are some
sorry if I'm repeating, I haven't looked at the thread since I started listing stuff.

Andrew Bird- (who whistles a lot... so do a lot of other musicians lately, it seems... )

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHkqoamZ76U -Nervous Tic Motion of the Head to the Left. I'd recommend Mysterious Production of Eggs and Weather Systems

Not going to link anymore but bet you can find all of these on YouTube:

Neko Case and also The New Pornagraphers (see sings with them, now also does solo)
Jolie Holland is underground-ish alt folk. I like Springtime Can Kill You Best, then Escondito.
Cat Power
Iron and Wine,
Calexico,
Damien Jurado,
Elliot Smith
Ida,
Wilco is still going, and they've moved away from alt country and done some sonic exp. and haven't heard them recently so can't tell you where they are now.
Death Cab for Cutie (listen to This Temporary Life on youtube.)
My Morning Jacket,
TV on the Radio,
Yo La Tengo is still putting out new and good stuff - last one I know of is I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass
M Ward (I like him a lot...he's sort off weird)
Regina Spektor
The Shins (have only released 2 cds over the course of years... last one a couple of years ago.)
Elvis Costello still does it. I like When I Was Cruel and Delivery Man from the last few years or so. He's now working with Tbone Burnett and going solo/accoustic mostly since he has a wife and kid.)
Beck - Guero and he's just re-released Odelay, which, imo, is a classic great cd.
Tom Waits is still kicking it. -some ppl think he's an acquired taste, like Stilton...
Red Hot Chili Peppers still do it... Stadium Arcadium was good
Devendra Banhart
Sufjan Stevens
Vic Chestnutt
Thievery Corporation
The Postal Service
Modest Mouse - Good News For People Who Like Bad News
Derek Trucks does solo albums and plays on the current Allman Bros. line up
The Decemberists
Bright Eyes
Southern Culture on the Skids
Fruit Bats
The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Mission of Burma
Jimmy Eat World
Spoon
My Chemical Romance

I like this music but it's more like trance - DJ Cheb i Sabbah, esp. Krishna Lila, but it's not all that new.

Air and Sigur Ros are... whatever they are

some of this isn't brand new but some is. I'd suggest that you go to a decent record store with headphone stations and see if you like any of these - their styles are all over the place, tho the first ones are... calmer...

11. Andrew Bird is great
I went to college with him, but doubt he'd remember me, since we weren't really friends. I saw him play solo shows at a local coffee shop a few times back then (late 90's), and have seen him a few times since. I don't know if I'd recommend it to a rock fan though.

16. I've seen him live too
and to me, genres aren't always so... clear. I mean, to me interesting music is something I like to hear, whatever the genre. A lot of the stuff I listed is probably not considered rock as in Aerosmith (whom I have always hated) but Pink Floyd was rock, right? except it wasn't.

Didn't Bird play in the Squirrel Nut Zippers for a while? They're not rock but... they're not not rock?

22. I'm always looking for something interesting
I'm not a classic rock and nothing else person - I get tired of hearing the same thing - and I have a good free form alt. community radio station where I am, so I get to hear lots of diff. stuff from them.

Lately, tho, I've been listening to Anita O'Day, Lester Young and Lionel Hampton's smooooth vibes old jazz and the Rev. Gary Davis for blues. I go through phases.

anything you want to pass along sounds good to me.

I like Jolie Holland better than the Be Good Tanyas - they seem to want to be more mainstream.I think she made a good decision to leave them and work with some New Orleans blowsy brass players.

13. two bands
I'm kinda like you, and don't listen to much music these days (in highschool and college I was a guy who went record shopping every week), but there are two bands I can recommend without any hesitation: the mae shi, and gowns.

18. oooooooo
He's awesome. I even loved the soundtrack he and Warren Ellis did for the movie The Proposition (Nick Cave also wrote the screenplay...real good movie).

I like his last release under the Grinderman moniker, and I love all his other stuff. Hell of a voice.

25. I strongly suggest The Mountain Goats.
They just released a new album, Heretic Pride, which is a great one.

I'll probably be echoing some other suggestions, but:

M. Ward - he's got three or four albums, and they're all good. Post-War is a really great one.
The Weakerthans - they have four records, I believe, again all good. The lead guy was the bass player in Propagandhi.
The New Pornographers - again, four albums of pop-rock goodness.
Wolf Parade - one album so far, but it's brilliant.
Songs:Ohia / The Magnolia Electric Co. - the same guy is behind these two bands, and it would be hard to go wrong with either one.
Jens Lekman - A Swede.
Christine Fellows - sweet stuff, all of it.
