Brown Rice...Bleh.
I made a committment to myself to eat healthier...I eat vegetarian...but I still don't eat as healthy as I should. Anyway, I decided to make an effort in the whole grain area and I've been replacing my plain steamed rice with brown rice...I'm not impressed.
I miss my fragrant sweet Jasmin rice.
Any ideas for making this crap more palatable?

1. I have an idea...throw it away and go back to Jasmin rice
I can't stand brown rice, either ( or wheat pasta, for that matter )

2. Yeah..the wheat pasta isn't going to cut it....
my friend told me to mix it like 80% white 20% wheat..and then gradually start to increase the amount of wheat. Maybe that will work with the rice. Blech.

3. wheat pasta makes me fart up a storm
I avoid that stuff like the plague. brown rice just needs some flavoring in the water. try cumin, or garlic

25. My sister has been on a wheat kick lately...every time I go over her place
and she makes spaghetti of some sort, she replaces it with that wheat crap!

"You can't taste the difference, can you"? she asks. Yeah, I sure as hell CAN-it tastes like I'm eating sand-paper that has been boiled. :puke:

8. you have to fry it dry first
wash the rice at least three times swishing it as you do it

put it in the pot over medium and let it toast while you stir it until it's fragrant and the hissing stops, add 2 cups of water (you can use broth instead of water) for every one cup of rice, add salt and a teaspoon of oil or butter (optional)

bring to a boil and cover and reduce heat to a low simmer for 40 minutes (don't peek) and then turn off the heat and let it set 15 more minutes (I told you DON'T PEEK!)

it'll be perfect, nutty and tasty

you'll like it.

10. Try brown basmati rice
It's definitely fragrant and in a steamer, it's perfect. I get it in bulk at a local Sunflower Market and hopefully there's a like market close to you.

I add in a little olive oil and Perc seasoning - herbs and stuff w/out salt. It's not sticky and has a nice little kick to it. A handful of toasted pecans, walnuts or pine nuts is good, too!

Good luck!

They have several varieties, and they are all yummy!! Mix 1 c water, 1 c rice, 1 tbsp butter, bring to boil, cover and simmer 40-45 minutes.

12. Wild rice is very good, and would go well with a lot of different things.
I do love Jasmin rice, and often choose that, but sometimes, I like the wild rice. Adds a nice flavor.

I'm with you on the brown rice. I don't really care for it either.

14. try wild rice instead
but make any rice you cook w/ broth (even vegetable broth) instead of water.

I like to sautee up some onions, mushrooms and garlic to put in the rice when I serve it.

21. Yeah most brown rice that is labelled "brown rice" is calrose rice
A very pasty rice, even when white.

It does work OK for brown rice sushi, but that's about it.

Brown Basmati is my favorite - and you can usually get it at most grocery stores as "Texmati"

but I doubt I'll try to eat it as "rice" again...unless I get some weird craving for the flavor of ass.

16. I've tried everything and I frigging HATE it.

I have a friend who is gluten intolerant so I bought the Trader Joe's gluten-free spaghetti, which is made with brown rice flour, which...as you might well imagine...makes the spaghetti taste remarkably like the outer bran layer of brown rice.

I've tried cooking the rice in chicken broth and adding a number of other flavorings and all I've gotta say is that I LOVE pretty much EVERY variety of rice EXCEPT for brown rice.

You might consider quinoa as a healthy option:

it's outstanding if you make a tabbouleh salad and substitute quinoa for the bulgur.

26. I love pretty much all rices: Basmati, Brown, Arborio and so on. But they're not interchangeable.
There are many dishes for which only a white rice will do. Brown rice isn't a good sauce-vehicle, if you know what I mean.

I like brown rice with black beans and avocado, or dressed with cumin and cayenne and oil with sundried tomatoes and pine nuts.

Brown rice is good - but you have to treat it differently than white rice. And I prefer a long grain brown to a short grain brown rice.

28. I forgot my FAVORITE way to eat brown rice: with a good lemon tahini sauce.
It really holds its own against a strong tahini sauce.

29. I cook Uncle Ben's Brown
rice which is parboiled brown rice. My fiance can't tell it's brown rice because the texture is similar to the regular Uncle Ben's.
