Sam Zell plans to piss all over Wrigley Field by selling the naming rights. |
|
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-cubs-wrigleyfield&prov=ap&type=lgnsI know two things. 1. I will always call the Cubs' ballpark Wrigley Field, even if some jackass decides it ought to be called Verizon Field or some damn thing. 2. That will be the end of my long fan relationship with the Cubs. That's it. It's over. I hope the Curse of the Goat lasts until the Second Coming.

2. It is named after William Wrigley, of gum company fame. |
|
I agree that Wrigley should buy the naming rights rather than let the field get renamed. Hell, it would even be a great marketing move..."Donate $5 to help save Wrigley Field!". They could drive donors to their site, get advertising out of it, not spend any money out of pocket, and help to preserve a sports landmark.
Oh, and as a northern Californian, may I say that it will ALWAYS be Candlestick Park? "Monster Park" is just stupid.

11. Seconded re: Candlestick. |
|
I'm not even sure if it's supposed to be Monster for the overpriced TV cables or the job website. Don't care. I do know that I have fond memories of my first baseball and football games at Candlestick, and I'm a bit attached to the place even if it's the ugliest example of municipal architecture ever, the weather bites even on nice days, and the neighborhood is beyond dodgy.

3. I hate corporate-named stadiums. |
|
The only one I refer to by name is Staples Center. But do you think I call it "US Airways Field"? No, I call it "the Diamondbacks Stadium". Oh and if some company decides to smear its logo feces all over Dodgers or Angels stadium, there will be hell to pay.

Although I still called it "Angel Stadium". The Arrowhead Pond is now called "Honda Center" but everyone I know still refers to it as "The Pond".

12. Huh. I'd assumed that the naming rights *had* been sold. |
|
But in the future, everything will be named after corporations.
