I had just released the hounds out the back door for their pre-bed draining, and they tore out of the house barking at full volume, running at full speed. Three terriers: Jack Russell, Rat and Schnauzer, all surrounding the plants on the back deck, on high alert and growling. I looked under the plant stands and there was one of the biggest possums I've ever seen. Also on high alert with teeth bared and claws raised. Yeeskies.
It took all my canine-like wiles and cunning to get the dogs back into the house without a drop of blood shed, nor case of rabies contracted.
I was feeling pretty damn smug about the peaceful outcome of this potential gore-fest as I related the story to Mrs R. Her only comment: "I guess nobody peed then."
So, I come to you, DU, to regale you with this astonishing tale.

3. We have an opossum who visits our yard regularly... |
|
Wolfgang has never done more than try to sniff the critter. The opossum has never even bared her formidable teeth at him...She's only interested in getting as far away from him as quickly as possible.

5. Weren't they originally bred to hunt such varmints? |
|
It's a good thing you got them back inside. That possum wouldn't stand a chance.

11. Yes. We had a male JRT once and if he had been there, there'd be one less possum about |
|
He was a great dog, but had no sense of humor about his 'job'.

6. One night I was out in the back yard with my dog. |
|
She suddenly lunged at something. I shone the flashlight and saw a giant possum. I mean it was big because it was nose to nose with my 110-pound Rottweiler. Fortunately, she had on her leash and I was able to pull her back.

7. My Australian Cattle Dog caught one once |
|
in our suburban backyard. He was so proud, throwing it around, making it bloody.
My husband used a shovel to put it in a garbage bag, and then put the bag in the back of the pickup to take it somewhere where it wouldn't stink up our trash.
He looks in the rearview mirror as he's driving down the street, and the trash bag is hopping frantically all over the truck bed.
The possum had been playing possum after all!
He released it in a nearby park and it hasn't been heard from since.
