Call me a Whaaa-bulance, I had to get a jobbie-job
No more surfbum/jewelery maker, have my coffee at the crack of noon days. I left my former firm a year and a half ago and I have had it pretty easy since then. I was hoping that my jewelry making could generate enough moo-la before my little cash stash ran out. I wasn't even close.

The last two days I've been interviewing for a financial adviser position. I got a call today that I made the cut and tomorrow I start preping for my series 65 exam, shortly followed by a series 7 exam.

Now I'm back in the finance industry, and my new company is a white shirt and tie, w/ black wingtip shoe type corporation. At least I won't be trading commodities any more.

5. Dang-O-lang..
Oh well.. I'm still not physically able to paddle out, so this whole winter has been a bust for me. Even when my arm and shoulder is fit to surf I will miss being able to stay in the line up when most of the dawn patrol leaves the water to head for their jobs. We used to call the time period between 9am and noon the "Gentlemen's Hour".

7. Thanks I was kind of worried because I'm getting long in the tooth.
Not many investment firms are willing to hire old brokendown injuns. The VP let me know that they don't expect me to cut my hair.. I did not bother to tell them I won't, they just knew it.

4. Bummer!
Please say they won't want you to cut your ponytail off!

I really am sorry that the things we love aren't always enough to live on. I've never had that but at least you got to taste it for awhile. I really hope you will keep enough time for those things and not let them go by the wayside.

9. No worries Miss hw
I've got a kevlar kayak in mind and they don't come cheap. I was making a ducket here and there but I noticed that sales are off by nearly 50% or more over last year. I will not stop making jewelry, and a matter of fact I'm going to start making stuff for myself; A heavy squash blossom necklace, bolos, tie pins, cuff links, rings collar tips. You know, the usual Indian bling. Of course Alison demands her due so there will be no slacking off on the jewelry making. Umm.. I have a proven history of sneaking in a surf session during working hours now and then.. so I think I can make the adjustment.

6. Dude, I might be joining you
back in Corporate America TM.

I had a telephone interview for a tech writing job on Tuesday.... now it's just a matter of funding it. The boss really liked me. I really liked her. I should know something in a couple of weeks.

The good news is I would get about a 13K pay raise.

So, I hear ya.

I'd love to bum around and just be a freelance novelist and playwright. Be my own boss and not have a care in the world.

I haven't bought a lottery ticket since I stopped trading commodities. I'm used to wearing a tie so the transitions won't be too bad.

21. The VP called me this morning.
He said that the position and industry is pretty conservative but because of my qualities and abilities he feels I will do well. He thought I should consider that it might cost me business but he is leaving it up to me. I'm not cutting my hair.

24. I am trying desperately
to avoid the same fate. I used to work as an investment portfooio manager. I am currently self-employed doing a bit of consulting a legal work from time to time. My last employer laid off over 30% of the workforce and, frankly, there is nothing about them, that job or that industry that I miss. I want to relocate and open a studio that does glasswork - and offers a ceramics and mosaic party room and corporate teambuilding opportunities. I'm honing my skills, volunteering as an officer in the local guild, making contacts, putting together a plan, acquiring tools and equipment, and even doing a bit of business consulting in the industry. I have a checklist of things I am working on that will be required to being this about.

Good luck in your venture back into the corporate world of finance.

28. Thanks
for the good wishes. And right back at ya'.

Aside from some fused glass pendants and such I don't do much jewelry work. But I know someone here locally who does some beautiful work. Yes, I've been tempted to learn and add it to the repitore. Maybe I will. I'd love to see some photos of your work.

I'd be interested to know some of the details of your adventures and your observations and conclusions. My own desires are not so different from your endeavors. I'm thinking you might have some practical insights that might be very helpful. PM me if you feel comfortable sharing.

I've been giving family and friends a lot of what I've been making lately (or making them for cost) since I am still perfecting my skills. I'm working on a good size project right now that is an original design. Foiled stained glass that could be mounted and used as a backsplash or hung as a window panel. I'll try to remember to post a pic when it is finished. Thanks for asking.
