The most biting, angry breakup song EVER!
My submission(s)

It's a tie between Jim Croce's "Next Time This Time" and Ben Folds "Song for the Dumped"

Next Time This Time

If you get to feelin' all alone
When your good time friends
have all got up and gone
Don't come knockin' around my door
Because I've heard your lines before
'Cause there ain't gone be a next time, this time
'Cause woman startin' right now
I'm gonna forget your name and your pretty face girl
And write you off as a bad mistake
You know that some women they are lovers
And some just got no sense
But a woman like you oughta be ashamed
Of the things that you do to men
And If you get to feelin' all alone
When you find that you can't make it on your own
Don't come knockin' around my door
You see I've seen your act before
And there ain't gonna be a next time, this time
'Cause woman startin' right now
I'm gonna forget your name and your pretty face girl
And write you off as a bad mistake
You know that some women they are lovers
And some just got no sense
But a woman like you oughta be ashamed
Of the things that you do to men
And If you get to feel' you where wrong
don't go wastin' your good money in the phone
'Cause I can hang up as fast as you can call
And that ain't all
'Cause there ain't gonna be a next time, this time
'Cause woman startin' right now
I'm gonna forget your name and your pretty face girl
And write you off as a complete disgrace
You know that some women they are liars
And some just got no sense
But a woman like you oughta be ashamed
Of the things that you do to men
Yeah a woman like you oughta be ashamed
Of the things that you do to men

Song for the Dumped

So you wanted
to take a break
Slow it down some and
have some space
Well fuck you too
Give me my money back
Give me my money back
you bitch
I want my money back
(And don't forget to give
me back my black T-Shirt)
Wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me
on your front porch
Give me my money back
Give me my money back
You bitch
I want my money back
and don't forget
And don't forget.

2. Richard Thompson, "When The Spell Is Broken"...
...Richard and Linda were basically soul mates, and when the breakup happened...starting with the "Hand Of Kindness" album and continuing through "When The Spell Is Broken"...it was failed romance on Shakespearean terms.

:toast:

When the spell is broken

When the spell is broken

How you ever gonna keep her now

You can't cry if you don't know how

When the spell is broken

When the spell is broken

All the joy is gone from her face

Welcome back to the human race

How long can the flame

Of love remain

When you curse and fight

And never see like

Or hear like spoken

When the spell is broken

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

When the spell is broken

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

Oh when the spell is broken

All your magic and your ways and schemes

All your lies come and tear at your dreams

When the spell is broken

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

When the spell is broken

Now you're handing her that same old line

It's just straws in the wind this time

When love has died,

There's none starry-eyed

No kiss, no tears,

No farewell souvenirs

Not even a token, when the spell is broken

Don't swear your heart

From the very start

Love letters you wrote

Are pushed back down you throat

And leave you choking, when the spell is broken

(When the spell, When the spell, When the spell is broken)

When the spell is broken

When the spell is broken

(When the spell, When the spell, When the spell is broken)

When the spell is broken

When the spell is broken

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(You can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how)

(Can't cry if you don't know how

63. His "Tear Stained Letter" is pretty good, too.
Not to mention "Did She Jump or Was She Pushed."

Richard's got a dark sense of humor/humour.

16. Oh yah!
"You Oughta Know"

I want you to know, that I'm happy for you
I wish nothing but the best for you both
An older version of me
Is she perverted like me
Would she go down on you in a theatre
Does she speak eloquently
And would she have your baby
I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, till you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

You seem very well, things look peaceful
I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know
Did you forget about me Mr. Duplicity
I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner
It was a slap in the face how quickly I was replaced
Are you thinking of me when you fuck her

Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able
To make it enough for you to be open wide, no
And every time you speak her name
Does she know how you told me you'd hold me
Until you died, til you died
But you're still alive

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

Cause the joke that you laid on the bed that was me
And I'm not gonna fade
As soon as you close your eyes and you know it
And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back
I hope you feel it...well can you feel it

And I'm here to remind you
Of the mess you left when you went away
It's not fair to deny me
Of the cross I bear that you gave to me
You, you, you oughta know

4. Ooh, you guys don't know bitter! I submit...
"No Children" by The Mountain Goats

I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a failsafe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town
Again in my life
I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
Yeah I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

10. My submission - well, I consider it a good breakup song!
Slayer - Exile

Even though some things are better left unsaid
There's a few things I need to get off my chest
I need to vent - let me tell you why

I'm suicidal, maniacal, self-destructive
You leave me no hope, no life
Nothing worth living for
I've taken it, can't take it anymore
My worst nightmare
You make me want to slit my own fucking throat
Just so I'll be rid of you
Just to get rid of you

You self-righteous fuck
Give me a reason not to rip your fucking face off
Why don't you take a good look in these eyes
Cause I'm the one that's gonna tear your fucking heart out
My hate is contagious; you've got no one to run to
EXILE

Just tell me fucking why everything becomes an issue
Your opinion is always senseless - fuck this
You make my fucking skin crawl
I've lived with it - can't stand anymore
My worst nightmare
I want to take a bullet in the fucking head
Every time I think of you, every time I think of you

You self-righteous fuck
Give me a reason not to rip your fucking face off
Why don't you take a good look in these eyes
Cause I'm the one that's gonna tear your fucking heart out
My hate is contagious
Anyone else need to vent?
You've tried my tolerance; I just want you to die

There's nothing more for me to say
There's nothing more for you to say
There's nothing more for us to say
I fucking hate you anyway
EXILE

Can't count the ways that you light my fuckin fuse
I can't tolerate the sight of you, the thought of you or
anything about you
You know what I want to see?
How many ways can a loser fucking lose
I know you'll find a way
The humility awakening the idiot inside
You spineless fucking maggot - you're just wasting my time
Get out of my face - Get out of my life
Out of my fucking way - Just die

28. Dylan - Seeing the real you at last
Well, I thought that the rain would cool things down
But it looks like it don't.
I'd like to get you to change your mind
But it looks like you won't.
From now on I'll be busy,
Ain't goin' nowhere fast.
I'm just glad it's over
And I'm seeing the real you at last.

Well, didn't I risk my neck for you,
Didn't I take chances?
Didn't I rise above it all for you,
The most unfortunate circumstances?
Well, I have had some rotten nights,
Didn't think that they would pass.
I'm just thankful and grateful
To be seeing the real you at last.

I'm hungry and I'm irritable
And I'm tired of this bag of tricks.
At one time there was nothing wrong with me
That you could not fix.
Well, I sailed through the storm
Strapped to the mast,
But the time has come
And I'm seeing the real you at last.

When I met you, baby,
You didn't show no visible scars.
You could ride like Annie Oakley,
You could shoot like Belle Starr.
Well, I don't mind a reasonable amount of trouble,
Trouble always comes to pass
But all I care about now
Is that I'm seeing the real you at last.

Well, I'm gonna quit this baby talk now,
I guess I should have known.
I got troubles, I think maybe you got troubles,
I think maybe we'd better leave each other alone.
Whatever you gonna do,
Please do it fast.
I'm still trying to get used to
Seeing the real you at last.

42. Dylan - Dirge
I hate myself for loving you and the weakness that it showed
You were just a painted face on a trip down to suicide road
The stage was set, the lights went out all around the old hotel
I hate myself for loving you and I'm glad the curtain fell.

I hate that foolish game we played and the need that was expressed
And the mercy that you showed to me, whoever would have guessed
I went out on Lower Broadway and I felt that place within
That hollow place where martyrs weep and angels play with sin.

Heard your songs of freedom and man forever stripped
Acting out his folly while his back is being whipped
Like a slave in orbit he's beaten 'til he's tame
All for a moment's glory and it's a dirty, rotten shame.

There are those who worship loneliness, I'm not one of them
In this age of fiberglass I'm searching for a gem
The crystall ball upon the wall hasn't shown me nothing yet
I've paid the price of solitude but at least I'm out of debt.

I can't recall a useful thing you ever did for me
'Cept pat me on the back one time when I was on my knees
We stared into each other's eyes 'till one of us would break
No use to apologize, what difference would it make ?

So sing your praise of progress and of the Doom Machine
The naked truth is still taboo whenever it can be seen
Lady Luck who shines on me, will tell you where I'm at
I hate myself for loving you but I should get over that.

44. Dylan - Ballad in Plain D
I once loved a girl, her skin it was bronze.
With the innocence of a lamb, she was gentle like a fawn.
I courted her proudly but now she is gone,
Gone as the season she's taken.

Through young summer's breeze, I stole her away
From her mother and sister, though close did they stay.
Each one of them suffering from the failures of their day,
With strings of guilt they tried hard to guide us.

Of the two sisters, I loved the young.
With sensitive instincts, she was the creative one.
The constant scapegoat, she was easily undone
By the jealousy of others around her.

For her parasite sister, I had no respect,
Bound by her boredom, her pride to protect.
Countless visions of the other she'd reflect
As a crutch for her scenes and her society.

Myself, for what I did, I cannot be excused,
The changes I was going through can't even be used,
For the lies that I told her in hopes not to lose
The could-be dream-lover of my lifetime.

With unknown consciousness, I possessed in my grip
A magnificent mantelpiece, though its heart being chipped,
Noticing not that I'd already slipped
To a sin of love's false security.

From silhouetted anger to manufactured peace,
Answers of emptiness, voice vacancies,
Till the tombstones of damage read me no questions but, "Please,
What's wrong and what's exactly the matter?"

And so it did happen like it could have been foreseen,
The timeless explosion of fantasy's dream.
At the peak of the night, the king and the queen
Tumbled all down into pieces.

"The tragic figure!" her sister did shout,
"Leave her alone, God damn you, get out!"
And I in my armor, turning about
And nailing her to the ruins of her pettiness.

Beneath a bare light bulb the plaster did pound
Her sister and I in a screaming battleground.
And she in between, the victim of sound,
Soon shattered as a child 'neath her shadows.

All is gone, all is gone, admit it, take flight.
I gagged twice, doubled, tears blinding my sight.
My mind it was mangled, I ran into the night
Leaving all of love's ashes behind me.

The wind knocks my window, the room it is wet.
The words to say I'm sorry, I haven't found yet.
I think of her often and hope whoever she's met
Will be fully aware of how precious she is.

Ah, my friends from the prison, they ask unto me,
"How good, how good does it feel to be free?"
And I answer them most mysteriously,
"Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?"

46. Dylan - I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)
I can't understand,
She let go of my hand
An' left me here facing the wall.
I'd sure like t' know
Why she did go,
But I can't get close t' her at all.
Though we kissed through the wild blazing nighttime,
She said she would never forget.
But now mornin's clear,
It's like I ain't here,
She just acts like we never have met.

It's all new t' me,
Like some mystery,
It could even be like a myth.
Yet it's hard t' think on,
That she's the same one
That last night I was with.
From darkness, dreams're deserted,
Am I still dreamin' yet?
I wish she'd unlock
Her voice once an' talk,
'Stead of acting like we never have met.

If she ain't feelin' well,
Then why don't she tell
'Stead of turnin' her back t' my face?
Without any doubt,
She seems too far out
For me t' return t' her chase.
Though the night ran swirling an' whirling,
I remember her whispering yet.
But evidently she don't
An' evidently she won't,
She just acts like we never have met.

If I didn't have t' guess,
I'd gladly confess
T' anything I might've tried.
If I was with 'er too long
Or have done something wrong,
I wish she'd tell me what it is, I'll run an' hide.
Though her skirt it swayed as a guitar played,
Her mouth was watery and wet.
But now something has changed
For she ain't the same,
She just acts like we never have met.

I'm leavin' today,
I'll be on my way
Of this I can't say very much.
But if you want me to,
I can be just like you
An' pretend that we never have touched.
An' if anybody asks me, "Is it easy to forget?"
I'll say, "It's easily done,
You just pick anyone,
An' pretend that you never have met!"

12. bitter? I don't know, but I like it
http://youtube.com/watch?v=A1xZ2YUhKbA

I will not be broken
That was then this is now
Found my way back here somehow
Knew you'd have to let me go
Told you once I told you so

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be...

Someone other than who I am
I will fight to make my stand
Cause what is livin' if I can't live free
What is freedom if I can't be me

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be...

I won't let you near it
I will let my spirit fly
Fly
High
Oh take me down

Take me down
You can hold me but you
Can't hold what's within
Pull me round
Push me to the limit
Maybe I may bend
But I know where I'm not going
I will not be broken
I will not be broken
I will not be...

13. I hate you, Bitch
Z-ro - I Hate You Bitch Lyrics

(*talking*)
Shit this your boy Z-Ro
f**king with Mike Dean, at www.thesenuts.net
We ain't gon sweat

I hate you bitch, I hate you bitch
I hate you bitch, I never thought I'd say

Too many years, I done paid the price
Why you gotta put all this, drama in my life
And day after day, I'm on the grind for you
Living lavish drape you in karats, what I'm trying to do
But Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'm, just a man
Trying to do all I can, but you act like you can't understand
Well I done sacrificed, and I done swallowed my pride
On the wrong road, trying to follow my pride
I was daddy for a while, though I've got no seed
But the kids, are my H-E-A-R-T
I've been dealing with a lot, so I've been losing my mind
Straight up acting before I think, barely using my mind
My freedom is on the line, and my sanity's gone
You picked a fine time to leave me, now this house ain't a home
I had no problem being faithful, I loved you so much I hate you
Because you left me, when I needed you the most
So now a bitch, is how I rate you
My female friends, making you wonder
Guilt got you feeling suspicious, from when you was creeping on
me
On the under, but even still I held my head
Five kids and I fed em all, with moldy bread and spreads
Them was my motherf**kers, treated em like sisters and brothers
But somehow I fell out of place, f**king with they punk ass
mother
I apologize, I wish I can turn back the hands of time
Wishing we could pillow fight, just one more time
But Ms. Ronda, wanna put them laws in my life
Although I'm happy, I never pictured you not at all in my life
Solo that's how I kick it, the rest of my days
But I wanna thank you for making possible, some of the best of
my days
I've dried my eyes, now and all they can see is the greed
You can have that jury, broke ass motherf**kers the seventh
scene

Too many years, I done paid the price
Why you gotta put all this, drama in my life
And day after day, I'm on the grind for you
Living lavish drape you in karats, what I'm trying to do
But Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii'm, just a man
Trying to do all I can, but you act like you can't understand
Well I done sacrificed, and I done swallowed my pride
On the wrong road, trying to follow my pride
I was daddy for a while, though I've got no seed

My freedom is on the line, and my sanity's gone

14. "Don't Want to Know if you are Lonely" from Husker Du
a little "poppy" for them, but that last refrain was just so cold, I thought:

"The phone is ringing and the clock says four A.M.
If it's your friends, well I don't want to hear from them
Please leave your number and a message at the tone
Or you can just go on and leave me alone"

18. This may not be 'biting and bitter and angry'...
But methinks it gets the point across... :banghead:

Loves me some Dean Friedman...:loveya:

Woman of Mine

I'm gonna find me a cave, I'm gonna shut myself in and not come out again,
I'm gonna stay there 'til I rot in my grave, and if someone comes a'knocking,
I just won't let 'em in.

Oh, Woman of Mine,
You picked a mighty fine time to tell me that you're on your way.
Now that I'm out of my mind,
Tell me, how the hell I'm ever gonna make it through another day?
Well, baby, there's just no way.

I'm gonna rob me a bank, I'm gonna get myself arrested and go to jail,
I'll spend the rest of my life in a tank.
And if someone tries to help me, I'll refuse the bail.

Oh, Woman of Mine,
You picked a mighty fine time to tell me that you're on your way.
Now that I'm out of my mind,
Tell me, how the hell I'm ever gonna make it through another day?
Well, baby, there's just no way.

I'm gonna go in my room, I'm gonna turn off all the lights and crawl in bed,
And like a caterpillar in a cocoon, I'm gonna hold my breath and make believe I'm dead.

Oh, Woman of Mine,
You picked a mighty fine time to tell me that you're on your way.
Now that I'm out of my mind,
Tell me, how the hell I'm ever gonna make it through another day?
Well, baby, there's just no way.

Bonnie Tyler sang this......you hear it once, that is enough

It's a heartache, nothing but a heartache
Hits you when it's too late, hits you when you're down
It's a fools' game, nothing but a fool's game
Standing in the cold rain, feeling like a clown

It's a heartache, nothing but a heartache
Love him 'till your arms break, then he'll let you down
It ain't right with love to share
When you find he doesn't care for you
It ain't wise to need someone as much as I depended on you

Oh, it's a heartache, nothing but a heartache
Hits you when it's too late, hits you when you're down
It's a fool's game, nothing but a fool's game
Standing in the cold rain, feeling like a clown

It ain't right with love to share
When you find he doesn't care for you
It ain't wise to need someone as much as I depended on you
Oh, it's a heartache, nothing but a heartache
You love him 'till your arms break, then he'll let you down

22. "Thirsty Dog," Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
I know you've heard it all before
But I'm sorry for this three year war
For the setting up of camps
and wire and trenches
I'm sorry for the other night
I know sorry it don't make it right
I'm sorry for things I can't even mention

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm sitting feeling sorry in the Thirsty Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

You keep nailing me back into my box
I'm sorry I keep popping back up
With my crazy mouth
and jangling jester's cap
I'm sorry I ever wrote that book
I'm sorry for the way I look
But there ain't a lot that
I can do about that

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm sitting feeling sorry in the Thirsty Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

I'm sorry about the hospital
Some things are unforgivable
That things simply cannot be forgiven
I was not equipped to know how to care
And on the occasions I came up for air
I saw my life and wondered
what the hell I had been living

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm sitting feeling sorry in the Thirsty Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

I'm sorry about all your friends
I hope they'll speak to me again
I said before I'd pay for all the damages
I'm sorry it's just rotten luck
I'm sorry I've forgotten how to fuck
It's just that I think my heart
and soul are kind of famished

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm sitting feeling sorry in the Thirsty Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

Forgive me, baby but don't worry
Love is always having to
say you're sorry
And I am, from my head
down to my shoes
I'm sorry that I'm always pissed
I'm sorry that I exist
And when I look into your eyes
I can see you're sorry too

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm sitting feeling sorry in the Thirsty Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

I'm sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very thirsty in the Sorry Dog
I'm sorry, sorry, sorry
I'm feeling very sorry in the Thirsty Dog

24. Sinatra's "I Wanna Be Around"
I wanna be around to pick up the pieces when somebody breaks your heart,
Somebody twice as smart as I.
Somebody who will swear to be true like you used to do with me,
Who'll leave you to learn that misery loves company, wait and see.
I wanna be around to see how he does it when he breaks your heart to bits,
Let's see if the puzzle fits, so fine,
And that's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet,
As I sit there applauding from a front row seat,
When somebody breaks your heart like you broke mine.
That's when I'll discover that revenge is sweet,
As I sit there applauding from a front row seat,
When somebody breaks your heart like you broke mine,
Like you, like you broke mine.

25. Everybody Knows...
Leonard Cohen

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

And everybody knows that its now or never
Everybody knows that its me or you
And everybody knows that you live forever
Ah when youve done a line or two
Everybody knows the deal is rotten
Old black joes still pickin cotton
For your ribbons and bows
And everybody knows

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that its moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But theres gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that youre in trouble
Everybody knows what youve been through
From the bloody cross on top of calvary
To the beach of malibu
Everybody knows its coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Oh everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Also: I don't know about BITTER, but for CLUELESS, I LOVE
this break-up song, because men CAN be so clueless sometimes...

27. This classic from Harry Nilsson
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So fuck you
All I want to do
Is have a good time
Now I'm blue
You wanna boogaloo
Run down to Tramps
Have a dance or two--ooh!
You're breaking my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But fuck you
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
Ooh!--ooh!--
You stepped on my ass
You're breaking my glasses too
You wanna drive my car
Buy a lot of stuff
I've had enough
Of you--ooh!
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame
So fuck you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
So fuck you
You've gotta have your way
There's nothin' left to say
There's nothin' left to do--ooh!
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearin' it apart
But I love you

29. I LOVE that song
Especially preceded or followed by his song "Without you" which is not so much angry and bitter as desperate

I can't live, if living is without you
I can't give, I can't give anymore

Pink Floyd "The Wall" and the "Final Cut" and Roger Waters "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiker" were all allegedly written during a very bitter break up. The Wall is the ultimate "I hate you, I hate my mother, and I hate the world because all of you are fucking me over and destroying me" album.

30. Biting? Angry? Nothing beats Tonio K. Remember, you asked for it.
H-A-T-R-E-D
(Tonio K.)

now i know it's not unusual
it's nothing so unique
there's probably hundreds of wonderful love affairs
that go bad in this town every week
but all of them others
them sad-hearted lovers
could cry in their beer, what the hey
it didn't concern me
was none of my business
i never had nothin' to say
but suddenly darlin'
the table has turned
you have left me for somebody new
and now it's hard to express
the resentment i feel
for the years that i've wasted on you

but let me put this another way · ok?

i'm full of h-a-t-r-e-d
i'm bitter and malign
you've got me
p-i-s-s-e-d off
i'm angry most of the time
why don't you
g-o t-o h-e-double"l"
you tramp
you philandering bitch
i'm going to
k-i-l-l one of us baby
give me time and i'll decide on which

and i know i'm acting immature
i'm acting like a child
i should display some self-control
instead of going wild like this
and i do wish i could accept all this
as simply "life" which includes pain
and act upon the actual fact
that nobody's to blame
yes i wish i was as mellow
as for instance jackson browne
but "fountain of sorrow" my ass
motherfucker
i hope you wind up in the ground

i'm so full of h-a-t-r-e-d
i'm bitter and malign
you've got me
p-i-s-s-e-d off
i'm angry most of the time
why don't you
g-o t-o h-e-double"l"
you tramp
you philandering bitch
i'm going to
k-i-l-l one of us baby
when i'm sober i'll decide on which
(but then again, maybe with the proper counseling, we can work this out)

32. Not sure if this qualifies as a biting and angry break-up song
The Offspring "Self Esteem"

Verse 1:
I wrote her off for the tenth time today
And practiced all the things I would say
But she came over, I lost my nerve
I took her back and made her dessert

Bridge 1:
Now I know I'm being used
That's okay, man, cause I like the abuse
I know she's playing with me
that's ok cause I got no self esteem

Chorus:
Ohhh, yeah...

Verse 2:
We make plans to go out at night
I wait till 2 then I turn out the light
All this rejection's got me so low
If she keeps it up I just might tell her so

Chorus

Intersection:
When she's saying that she wants only me
Then I wonder why she sleeps with my friends
When she's saying that I'm like a disease
Then I wonder how much more I can stand
Well I guess, I should stick up for myself
But I really think it's better this way
The more you suffer, the more it shows you really care...
Right? Yeah!

Verse 3:
Now I'll relate this a little bit
That happens more than I'd like to admit
Late at night she knocks on my door
She's drunk again and looking to score

Bridge 2:
Now I know I should say no
But it's kind of hard when she's ready to go
I may be dumb, but I'm not a dweeb
I'm just a sucker with no self esteem

Chorus

33. "Untouchable Face" by Ani Difranco
untouchable face

think i'm going for a walk now
i feel a little unsteady
don't want nobody to follow me
'cept maybe you
i could make you happy, y' know
if you weren't already
i could do a lot of things
and i do

tell you the truth i prefer
the worst of you
too bad you had to have a better half
she's not really my type
but i think you two are forever
and i hate to say it
but you're perfect together

so fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
who am i
bet you can't even tell me that much

two-thirty in the morning
and my gas tank will be empty soon
neon sign on the horizon
rubbing elbows with the moon
a safe haven of sleepless
where the deep fryer's always on
and the radio is counting down
the top twenty country songs
and out on the porch the fly strip
is waving like a flag in the wind
y'know, i don't look forward
to seeing you again
you'll look like a photograph of yourself
taken from far far away
and i won't know what to do
and i won't know what to say

except fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
who am i
bet you can't even tell me that much

i see you and i'm so perplexed
what was i thinking
what will i think of next
where can i hide
in the back room there's a lamp
that hangs over the pool table
and when the fan is on it swings
gently side to side
there's a changing constellation
of balls as we are playing
i see orion and say nothing
the only thing i can think of saying

is fuck you
and your untouchable face
and fuck you
for existing in the first place
who am i
that i should be vying for your touch
who am i
bet you can't even tell me that much

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Nobody knows where my Johnny has gone
But Judy left the same time
Why was he holding her hand
When he's supposed to be mine

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Then all my records keep dancing all night
But leave me alone for a while
'Til Johnny's dancing with me
I've got no reason to smile

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Judy and Johnny just walked thru the door
Like a queen with her king
Oh what a birthday surprise
Judy's wearing his ring

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to
Cry if I want to, cry if I want to
You would cry too if it happened to you

Oh-oh-oh It's my party and I'll cry if I want to

We sit in the car outside your house
I can feel the heat coming 'round
I go to put my arm around you
and you give me a look like I'm way out of bounds
well you let out one of your bored sighs
Well lately when I look into your eyes
I'm goin down

We get dressed up and we go out, baby, for the night
We come home early burning, burning in some fire fight
I'm sick and tired of you setting me up
Setting me up just to knock-a knock-a knock-a me down

I pull you close but when we kiss I can feel a doubt
I remember back when we started
My kisses used to turn you inside out
I used to drive you to work in the morning
Friday night I'd drive you all around
You used to love to drive me wild
But lately girl you get your kicks from just driving me down

You abandoned me
Love don't live here anymore
Just a vacancy
Love don't live here anymore

When you lived inside of me
There was nothing I could conceive
That you wouldn't do for me
Trouble seemed so far away
You changed that right away, baby

Love don't live here anymore
Just emptiness and memories
Of what we had before
You went away
Found another place to stay, another home

In the windmills of my eyes
Everyone can see the loneliness inside me
Why'd ya have to go away
Don't you know I miss you so and need your love

47. XTC - "Your Dictionary" (NOBODY does bitter and biting quite like Andy Partridge.)
With the possible exception of the previously mentioned Mr. Costello.

From "Apple Venus Vol. 1":

H-a-t-e
Is that how you spell love in your dictionary
K-i-c-k
Pronounced as kind
F-u-c-k
Is that how you spell friend in your dictionary
Black on black
A guidebook for the blind

Well now that I can see my eyes wont weep
Now that I can hear your song sounds cheap
Now that I can talk all your corn Ill reap
Im not so sure that joey wed a virgin mary
There are no words for me inside your dictionary

S-l-a-p
Is that how you spell kiss in your dictionary
C-o-l-d
Pronounced as care
S-h-i-t
Is that how you spelt me in your dictionary
Four-eyed fool
You led round everywhere

Now that I can see its the queens new clothes
Now that I can hear all your poison prose
Now that I can talk with my tongue unfroze
Im not so sure of santa or the buck-tooth fairy
There are no words for me inside your dictionary

Now your laughter has a hollow ring
But the hollow ring has no finger in
So lets close the book and let the day begin
And our marriage be undone

48. Are You Happy Now Richard Shindell
Are You Happy Now
Richard Shindell

You took the toaster when you went.
You never paid your half the rent.
You took the spices from the rack,
But you don't have to put 'em back,
'Cause in your haste on Halloween,
You left your camera on the bed.

Where we played roles in black and white,
You left a roll of black and white.
I set the timer, thought of you,
Put the lens up to my head.
I took a photograph for you.
What comes out gray is really red.
So are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?

I smashed your pumpkin on the floor.
The candle flickered at my feet.
As goblins flew across the room.
The children peered into the room.
A cowboy shivered on the porch.
A hobo waited in the street.

An angel whispered "trick or treat."
What was I supposed to do
But to sit there in the dark?
I was amazed to think that you
Would take the candy with you too.
So are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?

I've sat all night and now it's dawn
And I cannot believe my eyes.
There's garbage strewn across the lawn
Where we once stared up at the sky,
And streams of paper fill the tree
That hovered over you and me,
And shaving cream covers the car
That we picked up in Baltimore.

And though I know it's hard to tell,
I hope that what's-his-name treats you well.
I still maintain that he's a bum,
But it's your money; have some fun.
So are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?

You always asked why I had not
Written you a verse or two.
Since that's the one thing I regret,
I dedicate this one to you.
So are you happy now?
Are you happy now?
Are you happy now?

49. A Woman of Heart and Mind - Joni Mitchell.
I once got dumped by a woman - I deserved it - who more or less sang this song to me.

Later I learned to play the song - it's one of those bizarre Joni Mitchell open tunings - and played it in clubs.

A lot of people liked my version - a Van Ronk kind of voice, but with the humor all stripped off - but sometimes people here and there asked me why I didn't switch the gender of the song, since I was a man. "You know the times that you impress me most are the times when you don't try...when you don't even try..."

I am a woman of heart and mind
With time on her hands
No child to raise
You come to me like a little boy
And I give you my scorn and my praise
You think I'm like your mother
Or another lover or your sister
Or the queen of your dreams
Or just another silly girl
When love makes a fool of me

After the rush when you come back down
You're always disappointed
Nothing seems to keep you high
Drive your bargains
Push your papers
Win your medals
Fuck your strangers
Don't it leave you on the empty side
I'm looking for affection and respect
A little passion
And you want stimulation-nothing more
That's what I think
But you know I'll try to be there for you
When your spirits start to sink

All this talk about holiness now
It must be the start of the latest style
Is it all books and words
Or do you really feel it?
Do you really laugh?
Do you really care?
Do you really smile
When you smile?
You criticize and you flatter
You imitate the best
And the rest you memorize
You know the times you impress me most
Are the times when you don't try
When you don't even try

Hi,
Not sure how much of a break up song it is, but it sure is one of his meanest.

Peace

57. Yeah, Oh Yeah! by the Magnetic Fields
Are you out of love with me?
Are you longing to be free?
Do I drive you up a tree?
Yeah! Oh, yeah!
Do I drive you up the wall?
Do you dread every phone call?
Can you not stand me at all?
Yeah! Oh, yeah!
Though I need you more than air
is it true you just don't care?
Are you having an affair?
Yeah! Oh, yeah!
When we met I thought
money was everything
so I let you buy the house,
the cars, the ring
but I can't take your perpetual whining
and you can't sing
I though if we live apart
we could made a brand-new start
Do you want to break my heart?
Yeah! Oh, yeah!
I've enjoyed making you
miserable for years
found peace of mind in
playing on your fears
How I loved to catch your gold
and silver tears, but now my dear
What a dark and dreary life
Are you reaching for a knife?
Could you really kill your wife?
Yeah! Oh, yeah!
Oh, I die, I die, I die!
So it's over, you and I
Was my whole life just a lie?
Yeah! Oh, yeah

60. The Cure's "The Kiss"
Kiss me kiss me kiss me!
Your tongue is like poison
So swollen it fills up my mouth

Love me love me love me!
You nail me to the floor
And push my guts all inside out

Get it out get it out get it out!
Get your f**king voice
Out of my head!

I never wanted this
I never wanted any of this
I wish you were dead
I wish you were dead

I never wanted any of this
I wish you were dead
Dead
Dead
Dead

61. If you like blues....
Cool Guitars (Jimmy Thackery)

Well my baby threw me out because I drink too much
She offered me her car so I could move my stuff
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

Well she never should have called me a lazy slob
It ain't completely my fault I can't keep a job
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

Well she said I spend my money on tequilla and beer
Haven't paid my fair share since this time last year
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

She said she couldn't care less where I spend my nights
Sorry babe about it she's probably ... right
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar
I gonna sell the bitch's car
And buy myself a cool guitar

Another classic, of course, is Ugly Kid Joe's "Everything About You"

Are you the guys on the beach who hate everything? eww
Is this some sort of hip music that I don't understand?

I, hate the rain and sunny weather,
and I, I hate the beach and mountains too, boo-hoo,
And I don't like a thing about the city, no, no,
and I, I, I, hate the countryside too!

And I, hate everything about you!
everything about you!

And I, don't like a thing about your mother,
and I, I hate your daddy's guts too, boo-hoo,
And I don't like a thing about your sister, no, no
'cause I, I, I, think sex is overrated too.

And I, get sick when I'm around,
I, can't stand to be around,
I, hate everything about you!
Everything about you, everything about you, everything about you!

Some say I've got a bad attitude,
but that don't change the way I feel about you,
and if you think this might be bringing me down,
look again 'cause I ain't wearing no frown!
Get Down!

I don't really car about you're sister,
Fuck the little bitch 'cause I already kissed her,
One thing that I did to your old lady,
Was I put her on the bed and she didn't say maybe.
I know, you know, everybody knows,
the way it comes is the way its gonna go
Think its sad well thats too bad
cuz im having a ball hatin every little thing about you!

64. I'm pretty sure that Song For the Dumped was written by Darren Jessee
So it's a bit misleading to call it a Ben Folds song.

It was a song by the Ben Folds Five.

Don't you just hate music snobs?

65. "Unhappy Birthday" by the Smiths or "All is Forgiven" by Jellyfish
Unhappy Birthday - The Smiths

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I say "No, I'm gonna kill my dog"
And : "May the lines sag, may the lines sag heavy and deep tonight"

I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
I've come to wish you an unhappy birthday
'Cause you're evil
And you lie
And if you should die
I may feel slightly sad
(But I won't cry)

Loved and lost
And some may say
When usually it's Nothing
Surely you're happy
It should be this way ?
I said "No"
And then I shot myself
So, drink, drink, drink
And be ill tonight

From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
From the one you left behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Behind
Oh, unhappy birthday
Behind
Behind
Behind

All is Forgiven - Jellyfish

heal me darling
pleaded the playboy bedroom eyes
grace your sunshine
till everything's ok, alright, fine

what's hers is his
cause everything is forgiven
forgiven
though he soured the milk of human
kindness all is forgiven (all is forgiven)

truth and avarice
encircle his words like a
barber pole
twisted and useless
'til they disappear in her camisole
(goodnight alibi)

throw away your daggers and pills
cause everything's still forgiven
forgiven
though he bit off the nipple of
human kindness all is forgiven

hypocrite, four flusher, snake in
the grass
just a swindler and wolf in sheep's
clothing, liar

yes he tries to hide the cross he
bears
but splinters, like the truth have
always risen
all is forgiven

though he shelters himself
in the shade of the wings of a stool pigeon
all is forgiven
