It just hit me this morning.
And when I say, it hit me, I mean it hit me hard. I got up around 4 am to go tinkle and snuggled back into the blankies, looking forward to another hour of sleep, when all of a sudden it dawned on me and wouldn't let me go back to sleep. I'm going to be 50 this summer!

7. My dear hippywife!
Fifty...

I remember when I got to that age...

I felt as though I'd climbed the tallest mountain without oxygen...

It was time to take stock of my life...

I looked forward and back...

I had no idea where I was going, or why...

What a strange long trip it had been, and it has only gotten better since then!

Enjoy it, sweetie!

I don't feel old even now...and I'm 64...

You let us know when it is, and we'll throw you a big Lounge party, OK?

We don't need to hear about practically elderly folks tinkling in the middle of the night.

:silly:

It's just a number, hippywife, just like 40 was. 50 is no different than 49 and you survived that birthday, right? Go the Jack Benny route and call it your second 49th birthday.

Yet, I feel this inevitability about it. I already refer to myself as fifty, as if, well, what the hell, I'm going to be so I might as well start now. Yet, I fear the actual day will be very depressing.

We'll jump the hurdle together, my friend.

I was very happy when I turned 50. I didn't have to worry about competing with young hardbodies any more, could do what I wanted, could just be me. No more pregnancy worries. Hey, I don't have to deal with catcall assholes anymore either! Woohoo for 50!!

More like I don't have to be bothered by people who would want to annoy me. I got my first "senior discount" at 51 at a local thrift shop. That took me aback, but hey, I hear I get more at 55. Frugal, yup. Now you can be flamboyant if you want, chameleon if you want. Being 50 is cool (and yes, I like not having periods anymore also. woohoo)

26. We'll get through it together
I'll bring chocolate. I'm 47, and I'll be 48 in July. I'm no longer young. It's a very weird feeling.

It's also strange to be admiring members of the opposite sex and realize that I am old enough to be their MOTHER.

The worst part of all this? Getting up to go potty, then not being able to go back to sleep.

30. My Mum wrote her first novel when she was 50.

She never got it published, mind you. However, that's not because she couldn't, it nearly happened, but the publisher she started working with came on to her and she got scared of the publishing industry.

It was a damn good novel.

39. THAT is an IDEA that I HAD NOT HAD.

YOU RULE UTTERLY...

Now get typing. You've got days before your 50s start! Think how much you can get down on paper in that time! Even just writing down your life experiences changes them in your mind, enrichening them and reconnecting them to yourself in new and amazing ways. Writing one's own fiction's even more nourishing.

What do I know, you're probably already a best-selling novellist.

Anyhoo, my Mum said that her 50s was when her life started to develop into something truly beautiful. She's 60-odd now and says it just keeps getting better...

36. Thanx, sweetie!
The past 10 have been wonderful, really. Wouldn't change them for anything in the world.

As you know, I work in a retirement center so I'm always looking through this window into the future and it can be kinda depressing and scary at times. It struck me a couple of years ago that you can lose weight, change your hair, all kinds of things in your life but you can't stop that aging process. It happens no matter what you do.

I mostly still feel younger than I am. Don't feel I've changed much over the years except for becoming a little wiser.

Hope you are doing well today. Sorry you keep having migraines. All those pics of you in the big meet up pic thread are really great! You are so adorable I could just give you such a squeeze!

Edited on Fri Feb-29-08 06:26 PM by LibDemAlways
Then I thought about my mother-in-law (whom I never met) who died at 40, leaving three small kids behind, and I snapped out of it in a hurry. When you put it into perspective, it's just a number on a continuum. I'm 55, rarely give it a second thought, and try to enjoy each day as it comes.

An early happy birthday.

42. I will be 45 on March 16th.
My 27 year old daughter just bought a house, is getting married and moving out. I still have a 15 year old daughter who is going through some teenage angst period of life lately. Ugh. I think I may need a huge xanax the size of a dinner plate that I can just nibble on for the next few months! On one hand, I am looking forward to having two grown children since I have been doing this since I was 17 years old. On the other hand, I am scared shitless of getting old and figuring out what I shall do when it is finally "my turn". Getting old sucks sometimes. I hope someone throws you a huge birthday party hippywife!!
