So yesterday , I was awakened by the bank calling about the |
|
student loan payment that I sent out 2 weeks ago. They interrogated me about whether I sent the payment in, when was the next payment coming, what was my address, etc, etc. I checked my on-line account, and all the other checks I'd written and mailed were processed 10 days ago. The student loan payment showed up in the evening, which suggests to me that it had already been presented and cleared BEFORE I got the call.
So, when I called them to complain, I was told that when I mail the check in, I should put a piece of tape over the sticker with the bank's address since sometimes it falls off.
Also, since I complained that they had sent me a letter threatening to report the "missed" payment to the credit reporting agencies, I was told that that never happens until 60 days have gone by. I'm adding that info WWI in case someone out there is a little short and willing to live a little dangerously.

1. At least the next time they call, you can tell that you're hanging up to check your bank account |
|
online and when they call back you'll be happy to answer their questions if the check hasn't cleared. The lame comment about the bank address sticker should be ignored.
I really, truly don't miss the days when I had student loan payments. It was a never ending journey through Dumbcluckistan.

3. Is that a private student loan company? |
|
I had nothing but problems until I did the Fed consolidation and let them handle my loans. I absolutely refuse to let a private loan company take over at this point.

4. That's why I use online bill payment. Citibank tried to charge me $70+ in fees and interest |
|
for sending in my credit card payment late. But I pay all my bills online through my bank. My bank sent me the proof that the (electronic) payment went through on time and suddenly Citibank was very accommodating, telling me that "as a gesture of good will" they were refunding the charges. I wrote back and told them that it wasn't a gesture of good will to correct a mistake they'd made, it was simply correcting a mistake.

5. They ALWAYS call without checking. Had that happen to me several times. |
|
"You haven't received it yet? I sent the check in five days ago."
"Hold on a minute, let me check the computer ... yes, it was received."
"Well, WHY THE FUCKING HELL didn't you check before you called me, you IGNORANT SHITBAG?" Really, I was too polite.
Stupid moneysuckers. It's not worth two seconds of their time to save a phone call, never mind how much they're inconveniencing the person they're calling.
I used to leave my answering machine on all the time, and if I got a call from SLMA, just deleted it. Their calls have been, virtually without exception, pointless, except for harassment value.
