Taking my dog Ben to the vet this morning.
I came home from school yesterday afternoon and my golden Ben wouldn't come out of his crate. He looked extremely sad or guilty. I thought maybe he had peed/pooped in the house or something (something he has NEVER done). Then I realized he didn't want to walk. I couldn't tell if it was his back leg (he has a touch of arthritis) or another limb. After some cajoling I saw that he was favoring his front left leg. I can't see any outward injury and touching it doesn't give me any info. He was shaking a bit and just looked miserable. I figured I'd see how the evening went.

He was whining and crying on and off all night. The only time I can get him to walk is to feed him. He limps a bit, but not overly so. But he is obviously uncomfortable. I have an appt. for 9:30 this morning to get him checked out. It is just weird to see my obnoxiously happy goofball being so subdued and miserable. Any spare vibes for my Ben would be appreciated.

7. Poor baby.
Hugs and kisses for Ben. He's kind of old, right? Might be a joint issue; Charlie our oldest boy Corg has had on and off issues, a little early for him (he's 6 going on 7) but they are related to leg length.

11. We made the same trip
earlier this week. My boy apparently has a spinal condition believed to be congenitial. We came home with pain relievers, anti-inflamatories, and muscle relaxers. Doggie is now taking glucosamine. Vet believes that there will be further episodes and that the condition is progressive. I've been warned to watch for signs of compromised spinal function and paralysis. This dog is a real sweetheart and has already overcome some pretty long odds.

Good vibes for you and for Ben. May he heal quickly.

12. UPDATE
It seems that it his shoulder. He didn't whine when the vet poked and prodded, but only shuddered slightly. He was being so stoic! Usually, Ben is obnoxiously loud at the vet, barking at everyone and everything (in a friendly LOOK AT MEEEEE kind of way). But this time, he was so quiet and shy. His personality is totally off which is why I KNOW he is hurting. He is on Rimadyl (anti-inflammatory) for the next week. If he isn't improved in 3-5 days, I'll take him in for an x-ray.

Thanks for the vibes everyone. Benny and I appreciate them!

17. I'm so glad!
I have an Older Girl who gave me a scare like that: lost her bounce and appetite, seemed subdued, and was limping badly. I rushed her to the vet, and her problem turned out to be a dislocated toe! It took the vet all of five seconds to set things right, and she's been fine ever since.

I was praying it would be something like that with Benny. I hope he's back to himself soon.

22. Please, please do not keep him on Rimadyl for an extended period.
That medicine has been known to kill dogs. My Rottweiler was on it for 3 months and she developed bleeding stools. Rimadyl affects the liver.

24. It killed my sister's dog.
He passed all the screening and was going to be re-screened every six months. He was dead within 30 days of his first dose.

35. for Ben
Dear God, you have given us care over all living things; protect and bless the animals who give us companionship and delight, make us their true friends and worthy companions. Amen.

Dear God, protect and bless all beings that breathe, keep all evil from them, and let them sleep in peace. Amen.
--Albert Schweitzer, "Memoirs of Childhood and Youth"

God of the universe, be present with this your creature. Bless Ben and BarenakedLady who cares for him, now and always. Amen.

May God, who heals the sick, defends the vulnerable, cares for the poor, and liberates all creation from suffering and injustice, bring us all to that peaceable kingdom when all creatures shall live in harmony and all suffering shall be transformed into joy. Amen.

23. I was going to suggest that.
When my dog was limping, it turned out to be in her shoulder.

Thanks for the update. I hope he is back to his normal self soon. It is so hard when they are hurting. We all love our pets so much.

25. One of my German Shepherds
had a similar incident when she was about 1 1/2 years old. She started limping and was hurting, but we did not see anything in particular that would have caused it. They put her on Rimadyl for a week also and it completely disappeared by the time she was done. It has never happened since then. I think maybe they get a muscle strain sometimes just like we do and a week on the meds will help. I also am a firm believer in "puppy massage" too. Just gently massage out the muscle of the affected shoulder. They really love it. One of my dogs is totally addicted to massage now and comes over for a little spinal massage if I am on the couch! Too funny. Try putting him on some glucosamine/chontroitin after this is all over with. It is very good for their joints as they grow older. There are even some foods that have it in the product now. Rimadyl has some serious side effects over the long term though. If they want to keep him on that for a longer period for arthritis, etc, do some research to figure out an alternative. I hope he is bouncing around very soon! Don't worry too much.

Sending positive energy along to both of you. It's terrible when the kids are sick. I'd take any illness in their place if I could.
