16. No, just rather fond of tabbies
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 11:16 AM by KamaAina
My first, at age 10, was a gray tabby named Elizabeth. Later we had Sean, a friendly, mellow and playful orange tabby.

Then there was this guy I worked for years ago. I tried to describe a co-worker's (also named Sue!) cat to him. Merri was a calico, but with patches of gray tabby where the black would normally be. So the guy asks, "What's a calico?" Uh, okay, he went to prep school in England, so maybe he thinks it's called "tortoiseshell".

Then he asked, "What's a tabby?" Nope. The guy's just a complete :dunce: . From that point forward he was affectionately known as "the Little Dunce" (he stood only about 5'6").

Besides, the thread was, literally, a copycat: last night there were threads titled "Starting a copy cat thread..." and "Starting a 'fraidy cat thread...". All that was needed was another cat modifier ending in -y.

Bonus tabby trivia: The name "tabby" comes from a neighborhood in Baghdad called Attabiya, which we've presumably bombed to rubble by now, so as to keep freedom on the march, you see. Attabiya was once known for producing a striped cloth, which in Britain was known as "tabbi silk". Eventually "tabby" came to be applied to striped cats, much as "calico" did to patched ones.

edit: spelling

My pup has already learned to expect the flash. When I think that I have a very cute pic lined up, he turns his head at the last minute to avoid the flash...:-(

42. I used to think that the "M" on the forehead meant that all tabbies were mine
seeing as how my true and actual name is "Mark". Sort of like a cattle brand, except it doesn't hurt them.

31. I'm rubber, you're glue. Bounces off me, sticks to you.
All I see is a red X. In the words of the immortal Nelson Muntz, "Ha-ha!"

Oh, wait a minute, I'm missing out on a Bombay. D'oh! My all-time favorite cat Kwan Yin had a similar background, except Dad was Tonkinese (Siamese/Burmese cross) and Mom was a white rather than a black domestic shorthair. Does yours photograph well? Kwanny did not; she was such a shiny matte black that all you got was a picture of a couch or whatever with a cat-shaped hole in it, and two glowing eys inside the hole!

34. She's not a pure Bombay, she's got a bit of white in her hair
...me too, but for a different reason! Anyway, the pic depends on the background, I have gotten some like what you're talking about--complete negative spacing. The next Bombay I have I'll name "Rory" for a Rorschach ink blot.

I'll try to find a postable pic. I could get an image, but I had to click the "x" to see it. I'll try again, cuz she's worth it!

27. If I had a camera...
I could show you my 'undercover' tabby boy Riktor.

He's a black cat, but in some lights, you can see the tabby lines in his fur...mostly on his sides (he's mackeral striped) and the rings on his tail.
The fur on top of his head also has textural differences which correspond to tabby markings.

White Wimsey has very faint rings on his tail in certain lights...and my sweet Feegley-baby was a marble or 'classic' tabby beneath his glossy black coat.

43. Beautiful cats! Reminds me of the first cat I loved, Skippy, who belonged to my grandmother.
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 09:26 PM by Rhiannon12866
I adored him, couldn't wait to see him, but he hated me, as a little kid, and I don't blame him. :-( Do your cats have any white? Skippy had a white chest, so you could see him from far off, even in the dark. He was a great personality, but older than me, at the time, and older than most on this board... *sigh* Thanks for the memories and the great pic of your lovely boys. :loveya:
