I could use some support, if y'all don't mind.
I had a CT-scan yesterday and I have a hemorrhagic mass the size of a golf ball on my cervix. The initial biopsy is inconclusive, as well at the CT-scan. I have an appointment with the gynecological oncologist Monday. Thank goodness I have good insurance, though as an adjunct faculty at a community college, if I end up missing class, I don't get paid. But that's getting too far ahead as I have no idea what I'm facing as far as treatment, since we don't even have a diagnosis yet.

I'm staying positive so far. It's just that I have a million questions that I can't really ask yet since so little is known. My gynecologist called me tonight (Can you believe it?!) and said that this may not be easy to diagnosis so it's going to be tough for awhile. She told me at the exam Thursday that if I'm a lucky woman, it's fibroids and if I'm not, it's cervical cancer. So I looked up cervical cancer and it has a pretty high survival rate if it's in an early stage.

I'm 52, married almost 32 years, and have four grown children, so I'm not worried about fertility. I just want to know what's going on so I can begin taking care of it -- know what I mean?

Anyway, thanks for listening. I'm not asking for medical advice but I've never been this deep into the medical system before so if you can show me the ropes, I appreciate it!

Same diagnosis; she had surgery and it was mass that was filled w/ water rather than fibrosis or cervical cancer, and her doctor told us that the water mass was a fairly common problem for women of her age (late 30's). I'm sure you be ok. :hug;

52. I'm so pleased with my doctors
but I feel guilty. I keep thinking about those who don't have adequate health care due to where they live or what they can afford.

One doctor called me at home to make sure I knew how to get in touch with her over the weekend. She's the one I see Monday -- I haven't even met her yet! The other doctor called me last night to make sure that the first doctor had called me. She gave me her home and cell numbers. She is the gynecologist and was referred by the nurse-practitioner in my GPs office who first discovered the mass. So far, it has been a network of wonderful, caring women who have been looking out for me. :)

Thanks!

60. Peace and Good Vibes to you...
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 11:06 AM by skater314159
... my advise to you as a Chaplain is to:
Not worry - just take things one day at a time.

But I've been through the medical system myself, and I know right now, you're thinking to yourself "That's easy for you to say!" or "Screw you!". That's normal. At times you will find yourself trying to think of every possible thing that could happen, when at others you are just going to feel like you have information overload and just wanna shut down. That's normal too.

It's a good thing that you are "staying positive"... that isn't always easy, but it can help you to keep your sanity and selfhood throughout this experience.

One thing that might help you is to get a notebook - or open up a word document or a notebook in one note on your compuer... type out all of the questions that you have. List your worries, list your fears. Go to WebMD... if you find something there that seems useful to you, paste a link to it in your document. Make a journal of what you are thinking about and feeling. This will help you to get it out, into words, so that it isn't rattling around inside your brain (this helps me for some reason - getting it out helps me to stop worrying about it or obsessing over it) and it also helps you to put things in a format that you can share with your doctors and medical staff.

Doctors and nurses (at least the ones I have been treated by and worked with) like to have patients who want to learn about their conditions, and who want to be their own advocates. You ARE your own advocate... begin your advocacy now.

I will be keeping you in my meditations and will send you good vibes - not only today, but tomorrow and Thursday also. Hopefully you will get good news from the oncologists and lab... and understand that they are behind you. We are behind you here, too.

Peace, Be Well, and May you Get GREAT Lab Results!

64. That's outstanding advice!
Thanks! I've wished that I kept better track of what's going on with me. Except for being good about visiting the doctor, dentist, and eye doctor according to recommended schedules, I haven't been very good about bringing up issues. I'm like the opposite of a hypochondriac, assuming anything that is happening to me is "normal." I'm lucky that I was due for my annual gynecological exam because I wonder sometimes how long I would have put up with my symptoms, assuming they were related to menopause.

I will take your advice and start to document what's going on. It will help me feel like I'm doing something positive while I'm waiting. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your thoughts! And I love kitties that don't make me sneeze. :D

I haven't had to face it directly yet but it's because of people like you that the "C" word doesn't scare me that much. I know it won't be easy and there will be some hardship but I think I can deal with it. Thanks! :hi:

What kind of music do you favor? My husband plays trumpet in several Austin-area bands (all volunteer and an occasional honorarium that goes into buying music.) We like Dixieland a lot and are going to see Jim Cullum and his band from San Antonio today. :)

71. I am very eclectic, but my favorite genre is extreme metal.
However, I love folksy country along the lines of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore (The Flatlanders), Willie, Shooter Jennings, Merle, Cash, Lucinda Williams, Dixie Chicks, etc... so I am sure that I would like the type of music who husband plays.

75. Well, he's in a British-style brass band
(as in the movie, Brassed Off) and he's in a community band, a brass quintet, sits in with a symphony orchestra (not THE symphony) now and then, etc. They don't play much contemporary stuff unless you consider Sousa contemporary. ;) He loves jazz but says he doesn't have the chops for improv. He's also become a fan of Strings Attached. Have you ever seen them? We went to their concert featuring Bob Schneider a few weeks ago.

I like classic rock, big bands, Dixieland, classical, and many of the artists you mentioned. I don't care much for most recent country. I really like Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the couple who won the Oscar for their song, Falling Slowly, from the movie, Once: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87f5nj7cOjc I'd like to see them the next time they come to Austin. Great movie!

I saw Joe Ely in concert many years ago at Liberty Lunch and we went to Willie Nelson's picnic in Liberty Hill in the late 70s. Can't say I saw him, though, as we were so far away from the stage. In fact, we were so miserable from heat, lack of water (and funds to purchase refreshments) and then the monsoon-like rain that I think we left before he came on. ;)

Well, off to see Jim Cullum at Cap City Comedy -- much more pleasant conditions! :hi:

72. I am a 21 year cancer survivor. You have my good vibes.
The most important thing is to be informed and to be persistent.

One tip I can give you is to get a notebook and write every question you have in it. (even the minute and seemingly trivial ones). Make sure the doctor does not leave your room until ALL of your questions are answered. You may want to invest in a portable tape recorder and request to use it when you are asking your questions, so that you have clear answers (and not what is happening to swim around in your head). Being informed is the best weapon.

You're rattled and having the questions written down will help you with getting all the information you need.

It was lots of fun, especially at the end when several local musicians jammed with the band. Nothing more fun than watching a bunch of talented people get together to share their love of music!

My in-laws took the news well. I was a little worried about my father-in-law because my husband's mother died at age 49 from breast cancer so he's been through this before. But they've been around long enough to see many success stories, too.

79. Sending tons of good thoughts your way.....
You've gotten great advice here -- write down all of your questions and don't hesitate to insist they get answered. Take a tape recorder with you to record the answers so you can listen to the answers when you're not overwhelmed -- people miss LOTS that their docs tell them and/or forget. Barring that, take someone with you who can take notes.

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to go to the "what if" place. I learned from personal experience (before I started working in the medical field) when I had a breast lump that had to be removed and biopsied when I was in my 20s. Damn, by the time I got to the surgery, I had imagined myself one foot in the grave! (And I was pretty pissed at the world -- I'd already been diagnosed with MS by then.) Turned out to be absolutely nothing -- I wasted lots of precious time imagining and worrying!

Your attitude seems great -- no matter what people go through, that's critical! Hang in there!

98. Yes, though I did have an incident last week.
I called my GP's office to find out how much bleeding is too much. It was 4:35 on Friday afternoon and the recording at the nurse's line said they won't hear messages left after 4 p.m. until the next day, meaning Monday. So I called the receptionist's desk and she kept repeating what the nurse's line said. I asked her, You realized I'm having excessive bleeding?, and she said, Yes, and then repeated that I needed to leave a message at the nurse's line. Finally I said, Fine, if I'm still here on Monday, I'll call back. Thanks! And I hung up. About half an hour later, the nurse called. I'm sure the receptionist was following the office policy but I think they've got a huge hole in their "net."

But everyone else has been very caring and responsive and at least the receptionist did the right thing and had the nurse call me. Thanks for your good wishes! :hi:

112. If you're feeling anxiety and fear, which is understandable,
ask the docs for anti-anxiety and sleeping meds. If they won't give you any or enough, see a shrink to get it and discuss your feelings with the shrink. It's good to stay positive and not "fortune-tell" yourself into something it isn't. Worry gets you nowhere.

Keep us posted, hon.

I already have a hard time getting to sleep because I can't shut my brain down and I think right over music. So I listen to oldtime radio programs via my laptop, wireless internet, and a pillow speaker so I don't disturb my husband. I'm often asleep before The Whistler quits whistling or they stop playing the William Tell Overture at the beginning of The Lone Ranger. ;) (Note: most of these shows were before MY time, too! :D)

Thanks, barb!

118. Good thoughts headed your way!
The only medical advice this OB/GYN nurse has to offer is to take a level-headed friend or family member with you when you visit the doctors. Most clients are so anxious that a lot of information doesn't get through. Also, sometimes medical people have to be - gently! - reminded to keep the jargon to a minimum.

Fibroids are a lot more common than cervical cancer in women your age, fortunately. One out of every three or four women will be diagnosed with fibroids at some point. I pray you're a member of the vast majority. And here's a hug.
