Well, should you?
What advantage would it bring you?
A better job?
Cheaper housing?
If the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, then go for it!

6. The advantages and disadvantages are both numerous |
|
But yeah, it would be a good job and less expensive housing, partly.

8. it ain't Santa Barbara for sure |
|
but it's a fairly nice town
the tule fog in winter may make you suicidal, but a quick trip up the hill can cure that
housing is definitely cheaper and lots of sporting activities, skiing is close and lots of bike trails
Santa Barbara is pretty damned nice though...

|
I go to the beach, maybe once a month. I don't like the fog. I don't understand why people need to live near the ocean.

Twenty years ago, I left San Francisco to help out a friend who inherited a house in Anderson, Ca (just south of Redding)
The first thing I noticed was my next-door neighbour's bumper sticker which said:
"God Created Man. Smith and Wesson made them equal."
My other friend's husband had a deer head over his mantel and spent all evening telling me how he bagged it. It was like a Mike Huckabee story!
Not to mention that during the summer it got up to 120 degrees. One day the only place on the globe that was hotter was in Bahrain.
And if anyone thinks things have changed, about 5 years ago, I read how in Redding an interracial couple woke up one morning to find a cross burned on their lawn.
Nice. Not all of Callie is like SF and LA.
NOw...as for Sac, I have many friends there and they're so amazing and awesome it redeems the place. And the water is there, manifested as the Sac and the American rivers, for great swimming and whitewater rafting! But coming in as a stranger might be difficult, it depends on how outgoing you are.

SB is very nice of course but I imagine you might not ever be able to be a homeowner. Sac is a very livable town. If want the get to know the area, rent in midtown, and eventually decide where to buy. I live in the sierras, but know the foothills well. Folsom and El Dorodo hills a very very nice places with nice affordable condos. If you have the cash, some the the stand alone houses are great. If you want to live in a college town Davis is not too far. Where you work will dictate a lot I imagine. The fog is much worse in the southern San Joaquin than in Sac. Summer's are much hotter than the beach. If you need a day at the beach it's just 2 hours away. Good luck

15. I lived in Sacto for 7 years. |
|
I lived in So. California 3 years. Given the choice, I would never leave Santa Barbara for Sacramento. The air quality is poor, the summers are brutal, the winters are more rainy, and the traffic is a nightmare (compared to a smaller city in CA) in Sacramento.
For your sake, I hope you can stay in Santa Barbara. Good luck!

16. It is a great place to live |
|
It is hard to top Santa Barbara, but it is much more affordable.
If you like an urban setting the Mid-Town would be my recommendation. If you want something more rural then look at Auburn or El Dorado Hills. I moved to EDH two years ago from Long Beach and have no regrets.
One thing though. It gets a wee bit hot here in July and August.

I've been looking for a job in SB for MONTHS to no avail, and I've basically been offered a job in Sac with a good company. I know the guy who would be my boss and he's really cool, and the projects would be interesting. I'd be so lucky to get such a sweet deal in SB.

My husband and I did a similar move, San Luis Obispo to Modesto. The central coast was beautiful, and the weather great, and it was fun, but we decided we needed better jobs more than any of that. People kept talking about the incredible "quality of life" on in SLO, but it was tough to make a buck. I'd rather live somewhere less nice, and be able to have wild and crazy things like health insurance and savings...and go visit somewhere nice once in a while. We have NO regrets.

21. I've lived in both. Grew up outside of Sac & went to UCSB. |
|
Moved when I figured out that I would never be able to afford a decent house in SB. Of course, interest rates were about 12%. Still love SB, but man, living expenses were brutal.

23. I like Sacramento and I understand your dilemma |
|
I'm live near San Francisco and I'd be happy to move to Sacramento. The thing that holds me here are my family, my job and my friends since I've been here from birth except for college and grad school. So, I tolerate the high cost of living, fog and earthquakes for those reasons --if those things weren't here, I'd visit here on vacation only. I figure retirement age is way off, but if I could ever get a group of friends to move off to Phoenix or somewhere I would do it.

30. I lived in Sacto for nine years as a teenager and young adult |
|
and now that I'm all grown up, it seems like a pretty nice place (my parents are still there so I visit). it is close to lots - SF, the mtns, Napa. it has a growing lightrail system. the capitol would provide lots of political dialogue. the downtown has nice areas with some good museums. good colleges nearby.
it does get hot though.
