Shit - it's a broken kneecap. Need your good vibes!
My husband fell at work last night, and landed directly on his knee. Went to the ER last night and the kneecap is actually split in two. Swollen up to the size of a cantaloupe. Can't (shouldn't) move it at all, so it's in an immobilizer for now until surgery tomorrow morning, then he'll be in a cast for at least 6 weeks. Out of work for probably 2 weeks beyond that. Wish us luck and please send good vibes for a successful surgery and quick recovery. Owie

3. Thanks for the hugs - I'm also thinking about his 6', 250 lb frame
and needing to help him maneuver for the next several days until he gets comfortable with using crutches. That's going to be interesting. Yikes!

5. Maybe a walker
would help?

6. Possibly - I think it will depend on whether he can put
any weight on that leg at all. The ER doc said NO!!, but his ortho surgeon was a little less emphatic. We'll know more after the surgery.

7. When I broke my leg
Edited on Sun Mar-02-08 10:25 AM by hippywife
and then a couple of years later, a bone in my foot, I couldn't do crutches. I hated them! So I used one of the old style aluminum walkers without any wheels and used it like a crutch in that I just put my weight on it and kept the bad leg suspended. He may be too tall to do that but if he can, to me it was far superior to crutches. Still exhausting to use but much better than having bruised and raw arm pits.

10. Ooooh - I hadn't thought about that way - that might work if
the walker is tall enough - and I know that there are some that are adjustable. Thanks for the suggestion!

15. Yes - that is a very small silver lining.
Worker's Comp will at least pay a portion of his income, and all the medical bills should be taken care of. It'll be tight for a couple of months, but we should manage.

Thanks for your good wishes!

19. Your first reaction tells me that you really do know
whereof you speak! He actually said that this is significantly more painful than the heart attack he had several years ago. That's pretty scary... :scared:

Thanks for your good wishes!

23. One of the very challenging things about this is that
I work from home at least 3 days a week. Trying to keep focused on my work and keeping the income flowing while having half my brain targeting on what he's going to need - yikes!
