1. My ex father in law taught me that to get rid of ants
you could either use diazinon (sp?) or pour uncooked instant grits over the anthills. Once the queen eats the grits and explodes from the expansion, the other ants move on. It may take a few treatments, and the anthills may pop up a couple times more, but he swore by it if done consistently.

2. I tried the grit thing.
Several applications in fact...I think the colony is way to big and the pesticide is the last resort as I wanted to have a chemical free garden. Thanks for the info. I even tried putting a shovel full of ants from another part of our property into the infestation by my garden thinking they would have a "war" over territory and ALL would leave. That didn't work either. I good stick of TNT is about all I haven't tried :(
